Top 5 things to do when vacationing in Galle, Sri Lanka – Discover the charm of this famous southern coastal town!

Galle is one of the most popular coastal towns in Sri Lanka, known for its maritime heritage and colonial buildings. Visitors to Galle will have a variety of sights to see and things to do. Here are the top 5 activities for a memorable trip:

1

Explore the Lighthouse

The Galle lighthouse is almost as famous as Galle itself, and a testament to its past as a trading hub in colonial times. Its iconic white façade stands out against the blue sky and the sea. Located in the Galle Fort, it is also the oldest lighthouse in Sri Lanka. Walking around the lighthouse and the Fort is a great way to soak in the beautiful views, and you can also capture amazing photos during sunset.

2

Walk Along the Ramparts in the Galle Fort

The historic Galle Fort has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site. This stone fortress was constructed by the Portuguese in the 16th century and expanded on by the Dutch in the 17th century, who used it as a trading port. It is surrounded by thick ramparts, for defensive purposes – today they provide great views of the Indian Ocean. Visitors can take a stroll along the Fort and explore various sections of it. Some of the best things you’ll see here include old canons, the old Galle Fort prison, and the iconic clock tower.

3

Take a Bike Tour

One of the best ways to explore the Galle Fort is to hire a bike. This is not just a faster way to get around – it also offers a unique experience, as you whizz up and down the winding cobblestone streets, while taking in the sights. Places to see inside the Galle Fort include the Dutch Reformed Church, the Galle Fort Museum, as well as old colonial houses and buildings. You could also rent a bike if you want to explore more of the Galle town. There are many tour operators who offer Galle Cycle Tours. These guided tours will take you past green paddy fields, coconut plantations, and quaint villages. Unwind in a beautiful boutique hotel such as Kahanda Kanda afterwards.

4

Try out Traditional Stilt Fishing

It’s no surprise that Galle's economy and culture rely heavily on fishing. When you venture outside the fort, you’ll see stilt fishermen along the beach, using age-old fishing methods. The fishermen sit on elevated, cross-shaped beams on the sand, and though they rarely catch larger fish, it still makes an interesting spectacle. For a small tip, the fishermen will even allow tourists to try it out. If you prefer to watch or take photos, that’s fine too - it keeps this ancient custom going and helps out the fishermen’s livelihood.

5

Go Shopping

There are some great places to shop in the Galle Fort, with stores selling clothing, accessories and homeware. Pick up some Ceylon tea or local handicrafts to take home as souvenirs. You can also visit the markets in the town, especially down Sea Street, for a more authentic local experience. You’ll find spices, tropical fruits such as banana and papaya, and more!
