Why You Should Visit Yangon - Traverse the Garden City of Myanmar

Famously known as the ‘Garden City of the East’ for its abundance of natural gardens and green spaces, Yangon is the largest city in Myanmar and one of its major commercial hubs. Many who have travelled to the city often speak highly of the mesmerising landscapes, its beautiful gardens, its extensive cultural milieu and of course, its friendly and welcoming people. If these weren’t enough reasons to visit Yangon, here are 5 standout reasons why this amazing city deserves to be on your travel itinerary.

1

Shwedagon Pagoda

This iconic Buddhist Temple stands tall in Myanmar with its giant golden stupa that glints in the skyline. Over 2500 years old, the Shwedagon Pagoda carries a rich history and evidence of traditional architectural elements. It is also one of the most sacred sites in Myanmar with many of the locals visiting throughout the year. Located just a few minutes away from the Chatrium Hotel Royal Lake Yangon, this brilliant site is a must-visit for anyone travelling to the city.

2

The National Museum

Located in the Dagon region of the city, the National Museum in Yangon is one of two national museums in the country and is a significant bearer of Myanmar’s history and culture. Established in 1952 soon after Myanmar’s independence, the museum has over 5 stories that showcase over 5000 permanent collections with the occasional themed exhibition. The Lion Throne dating back to the 15th century is a popular attraction at the museum.

Inya Laka

This is an artificial lake and one of the largest in Yangon. Also known as Victoria Lake, it was built in 1882 during British occupation and served as the main source of water for the people in the city. Today the lake is surrounded by restaurants and cafes that provide good food and a stunning view of sunsets. Inya Lake is one of the popular tourist attractions in the city, with travellers looking to take a stroll along the lake or enjoy a boat ride.

4

Yangon Chinatown

Yangon’s Chinatown or Tayoke Tan is a vibrant neighbourhood located in the centre of downtown Yangon and is accessible from any of the hotels in Yangon. Chinatown was established by the British in the 1850s as a spot for buying and selling local produce. Today it spans across 8 to 10 blocks and is a great place to try delicious Burmese street food. BBQ is a popular choice, with options for meat lovers and vegetarians. You’ll also find great seafood dishes, local beers and whiskies.

5

Kandawgyi Natural Garden

The Kandawgyi Garden is located next to the Kandawgyi Lake at the city’s centre and is home to several flowering plants and wooden walkways. The Garden is yet another remnant from British colonial times, built in 1915 around the same time as its neighbouring lake. Since then both the lake and the garden have been a popular recreational spot for those looking to catch the mesmerising sunsets. It is also frequented by joggers and runners who prefer to enjoy the scenic environment.

6

The Amazing Food

A large part of Yangon’s appeal lies in its vibrant food culture, with many delectable dishes, flavours and ingredients that are worth trying. The local Samosa salad is a popular street food treat that contains fried samosas alongside fried chickpeas, cabbages, potatoes and broth. Mont Lin Ma Yar is another great option for the truly adventurous eater; it serves quail eggs with chickpeas, tomatoes and pepper. Shan noodles are a staple meal in Yangon made of fried noodles in a fish broth with chicken paste, tomatoes and nuts. Other popular delights include Street Pancakes and Gangster Sandwiches which are filled with flavourful ingredients.
