Khon Kaen

Identified as a fast-growing area in Thailand, Khon Kaen is a centre for trade between Thailand and Indo-China regions as well as Laos and Vietnam. The city is not the typical touristy destination, yet it is home to the largest university in the northeast of the country, Khon Kaen University, a reputed centre for education and technology and has many temples, shrines and other attractions that appeal to tourists.

 Phra That Kham Kaen Chedi

This Laotian-style chedi is (considered) the first structure built in the area, even before the city of Khon Kaen was founded. The golden chedi is erected on a square stone base and is covered by a multi-tiered ceremonial umbrella as it is supposed to have relics of the Buddha enshrined. The name of the city Khon Kaen has been derived from this chedi which is revered by the locals. Situated on the grounds of Wat Chetiyaphum Temple, apart from this ancient chedi the temple has an assembly hall and ordination hall on the grounds. This chedi can be easily reached from properties like Avani Khon Kaen Hotel and Convention Centre.

Phra Mahathat Kaen Nakhon

A popular attraction among visitors and the most important temple in Khon Kaen, Phra Mahathat Kaen Nakhon was built in the late 18th century and was made a Royal Temple in 1984. The temple stands out due to its design and stature. 80 metres tall and 50 metres wide on each side it towers in the area with 9 storeys that decrease in size. Relics of the Buddha are enshrined in a chamber on the ground floor making this a temple revered by local Buddhists.

Ton Taan Night Market

A large open-air market that operates from 4 to 11 pm each day on Mittraphap Street. A great way to spend an evening getting a feel of local vibes as you wander through the stalls selling clothing, handicraft items and exciting street food with entertainment.

Kaen Nakhon Lake

A scenic lake offering tranquillity and a respite amidst a busy city. The calm waters of the lake are nestled by tree lines parks, temples and a few restaurants to serve the visitors enjoying the peaceful environment.
