Al Jazirat Al Hamra (the name translates to Red Island), due to the red sand of the region Ras Al Khaimah was a bustling fishing and pearl-diving village in the 19th century, established on a tiny tidal island ruled by the Al Zaab tribe. With fishing and pearl diving doing well, the village blossomed. At the dawn of the 20th century, the village had grown to nearly 4,000 people.
This position changed in the mid-20th century with the discovery of oil and inhabitants moving out of the village for big cities. The dilapidated homes built of coral and the deserted village on the coast of Ras Al Khaimah stand as a Ghost Town, the name used for it now. For visitors using properties like Anantara Mina Al Arab Ras Al Khaimah Resort, this Ghost Town is just s short drive away.
