Explore the Wonders of Bentota - An Exciting Adventure of History, Culture and Nature

Designed by Bevis Bawa the Brief Gardens spans over two hectares and is inspired by the local traditions and customs of Sri Lanka with features of English and Italian landscapes. Formerly a rubber plantation estate, these tropical gardens have been open to the public since 1972. Visitors can embark on a stroll through the garden admiring its natural beauty, or they can opt for a guided tour for a wealth of information on the garden’s history and the architectural designs that feature within it. 

Also known as the Lunuganga Garden, this landscape bears the name of the famous Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa, who converted the former Cinnamon estate into the beautiful European Renaissance garden it is today. For convenience, the garden is divided into several sections including the red terrace, the glass room, the boardwalk, the yellow courtyard and more. The gardens also feature several lodges and work done by artists from across Europe and Asia. History enthusiasts will love the chance to visit the Galle Fort, a historical fortress at the south of the island. It bears witness to the presence and influence of the Portuguese and Dutch in Sri Lanka, with several Dutch colonial buildings and Portuguese-era churches still standing in the fort.
