Tangalle is a beautiful beach destination in Sri Lanka. It’s less crowded than most other southern beaches, making it a perfect place for a peaceful getaway. In Tangalle, you can experience everything from seaside adventures to protecting endangered turtles and exploring nature.
Tangalle has a pristine, untouched beach with white sands lined with shady coconut trees. The shoreline is a great place for a morning walk or run. Unfortunately, swimming here is not recommended as the tide tends to get quite rough. However, you could visit the bay, or the coral reef which breaks up the waves, acting as a natural pool. Hit the restaurants and cafes on the shoreline to grab a bite to eat or a refreshing drink.
Rekawa Beach is another serene location just outside Tangalle. Here, visitors will have the chance to see endangered species of turtles such as hawksbill and olive ridley hatching eggs at night. The turtles come out of the water to lay eggs on the spotless stretch of beach in Rekawa before returning to the ocean. You could also lend a hand at the Rekawa Turtle Watch conservation project which protects nesting sites and baby turtles.
One of the best things to do in Tangalle is to visit the scenic lagoon, home to several species of birds and animals. Go kayaking or canoeing along the Tangalle Lagoon and explore the mangroves. As you glide along the calm waters, keep your eyes peeled for wildlife such as birds, crocodiles, and lizards. It’s a truly peaceful way to escape the hustle and bustle of the city as you unwind amongst the natural surroundings.
The Hummanaya Blow Hole is located in Dickwella, a few minutes away from Tangalle. Known to be the biggest blowhole in Sri Lanka, it is one of the major attractions in the region. You will be greeted with a marvellous sight as jets of water shoot skyward before falling back into the ocean, sending spray in all directions. The best times to visit the Blow Hole are in the morning and evening before it gets too sunny. April to September are the best months to go when the jets of water can reach heights of 25-30 metres.
Silent Beach is one of the most picturesque beaches in Tangalle. It is a hidden gem, with turquoise blue waters and golden sands. Enjoy some peace as you relax, have a picnic or bask in the sun and admire the stunning views of the Indian Ocean. The waves tend to be rough, so swimming is not advised - however, snorkelling can be done here!
Goyambokka Beach is located just outside Tangalle, in Matara. Unlike Silent Beach, this is a more touristy location and tends to get quite busy. However, swimming is safe here, and the beach is unpolluted and scenic. You’ll be able to find accommodation in some of the best hotels in the area such as Anantara Peace Haven Tangalle Resort.
Parewella Natural Swimming Area is considered to be a safe swimming spot and the waves here are calm. Holidaymakers can go for a refreshing dip in the water. Though it can get slightly crowded during certain times of the year, it is worth paying a visit since the waters are shallow and clear, making it perfect for snorkelling and exploring marine life.
The Kalametiya Bird Sanctuary is a remote wetland area in Tangalle, ideal for bird watchers and nature lovers. The saltwater lagoons and mangroves are home to 150 bird species, including endemic and migratory birds, as well as mammals and reptiles. Visitors can embark on a boat safari to explore this beautiful sanctuary.
