Aerospace engineering skills: How to take off and excel in your dream career

Aircraft engineering is considered a dynamic and thrilling career path. More than mere technical knowledge is required from individuals who wish to climb up the ladder in this field. Find out the skills that are in demand for you to make it big in the aerospace engineering field.

1

Ability to resolve issues

Aircraft engineers deal with delicate machines. They prioritise safety, giving a lot of thought to solving problems while designing and putting an aircraft together. By enhancing the ability to note issues and find appropriate answers for them promptly, these individuals can give a better output, while catering to the needs of the client.

2

Computer literacy

Since almost everything around us is technology-driven, being equipped with computer knowledge is a must for modern aircraft engineers.  Such skills come in handy to perform certain functions easily such as drawing up blueprints for a new model. Information can also be shared easily among a team via data stored in spreadsheets.

3

Operational investigative qualities

A much-needed task in aerospace engineering is to inspect the operations of an aircraft, mainly the design, manufacturing, and testing processes. Through inspection and scrutinisation, engineers can decide which areas need to be enhanced, thereby improving the features of the product.

4

Making judgments based on analysis

An aircraft engineer needs to evaluate the data given to him or her and find reasonable solutions for any problems at hand. This feature deals more with the mathematical and scientific aspects of the occupation since it involves dismantling components of an aircraft in one's mind and surveying each section separately. Thus, the aircraft engineer would be able to find out-of-the-box answers to resolve some of the issues he or she has come across through his or her inspections.

5

Innovativeness

Innovation comes into play when designing new and arresting models. Since this is an ever-evolving industry, a bit of creativity can take you a long way and earn you a reputation for being an innovative designer by adding new and unique features to your designs.

6

Being a science and maths expert

In recent years more and more youth have shown interest in aircraft engineering and have taken up courses in the Aeronautical Engineering Stream at engineering colleges in Sri Lanka because aeronautical engineering is renowned as a prestigious job with high wages. Therefore, instead of becoming research analysts, statisticians, or economists, many who excel in the maths and science sectors go for professions like aerospace engineering because you can make use of what you have learned during college on the job. Subjects like calculus, physics, trigonometry, and aerodynamics are especially handy in this profession.

7

Working according to a critical mindset

Becoming an aircraft engineer is no walk in the park because it demands 5 to 7 years or more of thorough training, learning, and practical experience in management to become a fully qualified aerospace engineer. If you follow the two-year Aircraft Maintenance Training (AME) programme at Cinec Campus Sri Lanka, you need only another additional two-year on-the-job training (OJT) work experience with an accepted airline or aircraft engineer before being employed. Since these airplanes carry passengers at high altitudes, every aspect needs to be thoroughly scrutinised. Therefore, overlooking any important details can result in disaster. By noticing and addressing likely issues beforehand, the aircraft engineer ensures the safety of all those on board and prepares them for a smooth ride.
