Registered Dietitians A registered dietitian is a food and nutrition expert who has met academic and professional requirements. Approximately 50% of RDs hold advanced degrees. Some RDs also hold additional certifications in specialized areas of practice, such as pediatric or renal nutrition, nutrition support and diabetes education.

To be certified as a dietitian-nutritionist in New York State you must: be at least 18 years of age; and meet education, examination and experience requirements.

An applicant must file an application for licensure/registration with the New York State Education Department, Office of the Professions, to practice as a dietitian/nutritionist in New York State.
