Having once served as the capital of the country, Nizwa is no ordinary tourist hub in Oman. Nizwa is home to some of Oman's most impressive heritage sites and breathtaking natural wonders, and a trip to this city would not be complete without discovering the following attractions.
Considered the best-preserved palace in all of Nizwa, the Jabreen Castle is a mammoth historical landmark that's as impressive today as in the era when it was first constructed. Built nearly 600 years ago, the castle was not a traditional royal residence but an epicentre for education with a focus on Medicine, Islamic Law and Astrology. Adorned with elaborately painted ceilings, the breathtaking architecture of the castle and its inner chambers is what keeps visitors returning again and again to this resplendent royal abode wherein there was even a room devoted to the Sultan's favourite steed. Open from 9 am to 4 pm, from Saturday to Thursday, the castle welcomes visitors only between 8 am and 11 am on Fridays.
Affectionately known as Nizwa's Green Mountain, Jebel Akhdar is a captivating natural retreat adorned with walnut and date farms, along with lush orchards. It's revered as a must-visit destination for nature enthusiasts and passionate hikers. Nestled within the Al Hajar mountain range, it offers excellent opportunities for wildlife sightings, with leopards, wolves, deer, and other majestic creatures roaming its terrain. Moreover, the world's finest pomegranates flourish on its steep slopes. While Jebel Akhdar's beauty enchants year-round, the optimal time for trekking is from March to April. This mountain is easily accessible to travellers based at Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar and other similar resorts and hotels in Nizwa.
Nizwa Fort, which dates back to the 9th century, is one of the most famous landmarks in Oman. It is known for its impressive architecture and ancient inscriptions on its walls. The fort underwent a major renovation in the 17th century and is considered an iconic structure in Oman. Although tourists visit the fort for the stunning views, locals come to pay homage to the mosque located within its walls. The fort is closed on Fridays and open to visitors between 8 am and 8 pm from Saturday to Thursday.
A trip to Nizwa would be incomplete without enjoying a shopping spree at this traditional bazaar. Retailing everything from souvenirs, handicrafts and mosaic lamps to silver jewellery and other keepsakes, the Nizwa Souq is also a prime location for those in search of antiques and vintage goods.
As one of Nizwa's natural wonders, the Tanuf Falls, which occupies the Tanuf Valley, is another must-experience point of interest for first-time visitors. Often described as a world apart from the remainder of Nizwa, the cool natural environment surrounding the cascade is delightful all year round, regardless of the local weather conditions. Visitors can revel in the serenity of the falls, surrounded by lush greenery and rocky cliffs, making it a perfect spot for picnics or leisurely hikes. The rhythmic sound of cascading water further enhances the tranquil atmosphere, providing a soothing escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.
