Phi Phi islands in Thailand are famous for their scenic beauty and pristine waters. While this beach paradise is a wonderful place to relax and unwind, it is also an adventure seeker’s dream. The array of activities on offer is abundant, from swimming to more risky sports like cliff diving and rock climbing. There are 6 islands in total, namely, Koh Phi Phi Don, Koh Phi Phi Leh, Koh Bida Nok, Koh Bida Nai, Koh Phai, and Koh Young. The largest and only inhabited island is Koh Phi Phi Don. Let’s take a look at the best outdoor activities available on these beautiful islands.
Travellers can take a boat ride across the crystal-clear waters of the second-largest island, Koh Phi Phi Leh, to explore the eye-catching Maya Bay. The bay is surrounded by large limestone cliffs, and visitors can stroll along the powdery white sands, or view the coral reef to catch a glimpse of a variety of fish, including sharks. At night, plankton light up the waters in a gorgeous display. There are many great resorts such as SAii Phi Phi Island Village to relax in after a long day spent exploring.
Koh Phi Phi Don is a picturesque island offering a wonderful bird’s eye view of Tonsai Village, and Loh Dalum Bay. It’s the perfect place to capture some great photos with family. Though the viewpoint is located at a height of 186 m, the climb to the top is not arduous and can be done within about 30 minutes. Visitors will be able to admire the dumbbell shape of the island and the aquamarine hue of the sea.
The islands are a wonderful place for adventure junkies who want to go rock climbing, thanks to the enormous limestone cliffs dotting the seas. Some of the most popular rock-climbing sites on Phi Phi islands include Hua Ling Wall, Hin Tak and Tonsai Tower. There are suitable spots for climbers of all levels, from beginner to advanced. Tonsai Tower is the tallest, at 200 metres, and is located in Tonsai Bay.
One of the most popular water sports in Phi Phi Island is diving, with many world-class diving sites present in its waters. Visitors will be able to explore an enchanting underwater world and view coral reefs, colourful tropical fish, caves and shipwrecks on an unforgettable adventure. Turtles and sharks are a common sight beneath the waters. Some of the best dive sites are Anemone Reef, Shark Point, King Cruiser Wreck, and Maya Bay.
This sport is not for the faint-hearted, but it’s one of the most sought-after activities on the islands. There are many great spots for rock climbing, however it’s recommended to go with a guided tour. Some of these tours also offer snorkelling, which makes for a more adventurous combination. It is best to start from lower heights, such as 3 metres and slowly progress to the ultimate 20-metre leap.
