Kandy, Sri Lanka's cultural heart, isn't just about temples and museums. Nestled amidst emerald hills, the city offers a paradise for hikers, nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. Lace-up your boots and get ready to explore misty mountains, hidden waterfalls, and panoramic vistas!

1

Pettigala Mountain

Only around 20 kilometres away from Kandy lies Pettigala Mountain, a perfect choice for a relaxing hike. The trek to the 760-metre summit is relatively easy, along a 1 kilometre-route to reach the top. Along the way, delve into history by observing two ancient caves - Sithuwam Lena and Indrasala Guhawa. Reaching the top unveils a magnificent panorama. Take in the sight of the surrounding mountains and the glistening Victoria Reservoir. Breathe in the fresh air and soak in the tranquillity at the summit. To add a cultural touch to your adventure, you can visit the Bambaragala Raja Maha Viharaya, a sacred Buddhist temple.

2

Hanthana Mountain Range

The majestic Hanthana Mountain Range rises next to the city, visible to those exploring Sri Lanka’s hill capital and enjoying the many activities in Kandy. With four main trails, this range caters to hikers of all levels. The Hanthana-Uduwela route offers the easiest access, perfect for a moderate hike lasting a few hours. As you conquer the first peak, the range opens up for longer treks. For the adventurous hiker, Uragala, the highest point at 1240 metres, beckons with breathtaking views. Such travellers can also test their nerves at Katusukonda, a narrow pathway along a massive rock face. Remember, the weather on the mountain range can change quickly so always check the forecast before setting off.

3

Knuckles Mountain Range

One of the most famous places for hiking in Sri Lanka, the Knuckles Mountain Range lies approximately 30 to 40 kilometres from Kandy; you can easily enjoy excursions here when based in the city at properties like Earl’s Regency. Shrouded in mist, the cloud forests in this range are home to diverse flora and fauna and this dream destination also happens to be part of the “Central Highlands of Sri Lanka”, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Knuckles Five Peaks is the most popular trail, with an elevation that reaches 1863 metres. This challenging and extended trek starts at the Dawatagala Nature Trail, and you will encounter the cascading beauty of Knuckles Falls along the way. The difficulty level increases with elevation, and you can choose to conquer all five peaks in a day or explore them at your own pace.

4

Kehelpathdoruwa and Yahangala

For a unique adventure, explore Kehelpathdoruwa and Yahangala, two neighbouring mountains on the Knuckles Range's southeastern side. Located about 60 kilometres east of Kandy, these peaks are popular among local hikers. The trail begins in the small village of Kalugala. Kehelpathdoruwa, at 1485 metres, offers a moderately challenging climb with long stretches for trekking. Yahangala (1220 metres) is linked to the legend of the epic Ramayana; however, scaling this peak requires a skilled guide due to its challenging terrain.

5

Alagalla Mountain Range

Alagalla offers a moderately difficult hike lasting 2 to 4 hours, making it another ideal place for adventurers staying in Kandy. Choose your starting point - Poththapitiya Village or Ihala Kotte Railway Station (the more popular route). Both routes converge near the Alagalla Tea Factory, from where you follow a narrow path towards the summit. The final ascent gets steeper, testing your endurance. The reward for your effort is a panoramic view from the highest point at 1140 metres. Alagalla is a perfect escape for those seeking an adventure amidst breathtaking scenery.
