Unique and Unusual Things to Do in Sydney – Explore the Heart of Australia

The oldest city in Australia, Sydney welcomes you with a smile on its sunny face. This stunning city has a lot to offer. Here are some quirky things you can do during your trip to Sydney.

1

The Rocks

To get a glimpse of Sydney’s aboriginal history, visit The Rocks. In the past, The Rocks was where the Gadigal Aboriginal people lived, but later it became a European settlement. This was a place where the convicts landed, and The Rocks refer to the spot where they pitched their tents. Today, about 100 sites and buildings line the narrow streets. The Rocks is also where you find the city’s oldest house: Cadman’s Cottage. For more insights, visit the Rocks Discovery Museum. Plus, there’s a free guided tour you can join.

2

The Royal Botanic Garden Sydney

Need a break from the city bustle? Head over to the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney. From the Sydney Opera House, it’s only a short walk away, and it’s a free attraction in the city. Going back to 1816, the garden is the oldest in Sydney. Covering over 30 hectares of land, the garden features a variety of flowers and trees, offering you a delightful nature fix. There are several sections to this garden, including a rose garden and a greenhouse. Getting here from anywhere in Sydney is easy. From Citadines Walker North Sydney, which is the ideal establishment if you are looking for a plush North Sydney apartment, it’s only a few minutes away.

3

A Harbour Cruise

Sydney’s Harbour is the lifeblood of the city, and taking a harbour cruise is essential if you want to enjoy the full picture of the harbour as well as the city. Most harbour cruises start at Circular Quay in Sydney Cove, which is also where you find the main terminal of the city. If you don’t have a lot of time, you can join a short tour – the two-hour Sydney Harbour Coffee Cruise is ideal for someone short on time. Also, if you want to see whales during your tour, join the Sydney Whale-Watching Cruise.

4

Queen Victoria Building

For a bit of shopping, visit the Queen Victoria Building. Even if you don’t want to buy anything, it’s worth a visit. The building’s Romanesque-style architecture is one of the reasons why it has become a tourist hotspot. Mosaic floors and colour-stained glass windows are two of the highlights. The building was left to fall apart for a while, and it was supposed to be demolished. However, in the 1980s, the building was brought back to its original state. Today, inside this building, there are about 200 shops offering all sorts of merchandise. Some of the well-known Australian stores here include Haigh, Lorna Jane, and R.M Williams. Here, you’ll also find galleries, gift stores, and homeware stores. Feeling like grabbing a cup of tea? There are plenty of tea houses and cafes offering all sorts of tea, coffee, and snacks.

5

The Sydney Tower Eye

The tallest building in the city, the Sydney Tower Eye hovers over the city at 309 metres high. One of the most prominent landmarks in the city, the golden turret is its most eye-catching feature. There are lifts to take you up to the top of the tower, where you will be treated to a feast of stunning views sweeping across the city centre. Plus, the restaurant and the café here serve up delicious snacks and drinks for weary travellers.

Taronga Zoo

For a mix of stunning views and animals, visit Taronga Zoo. Sitting by the harbour, the zoo is in a prime location within an affluent neighbourhood. Here, you have the chance to meet Australian wildlife as well as animals from around the world. Gorillas, chimpanzees, Tiger Trek, and the African Savannah exhibit are among the main highlights. There are also feeding sessions and various animal shows.
