Located in Sri Lanka’s Matara District of the Southern Province, Mirissa is a laid-back but uber-chic beach town which has evolved into a popular tourist destination over the past couple of years. Planning a visit there anytime soon? Then here is a curated list of some of the best places to visit in Mirissa.
The main attraction of this little township, Mirissa Beach is a long, beautiful stretch of golden sandy shores kissed by cerulean blue waters. The water is warm and inviting and is great for long lazy dips between extended sunbathing sessions. Situated in a protected cove, this particular beach is home to some top Mirissa beach front hotels such as the likes of Vis Ta Vie Mirissa. Apart from offering top accommodation options, Mirissa Beach is also home to plenty of fantastic bars and restaurants that are great to head to, especially for evening drinks or a romantic dinner.
As great as Mirissa Beach can be it can get super crowded with large crowds; so those looking for some respite from the hustle and bustle should consider heading to Secret Beach. It’s a great spot to simply sit back, relax, and sunbathe to your heart’s content. Remember to carry plenty of reef-safe sunblock, a beach towel, a sun hat and lots of water along with snacks as there are no vendors around to purchase these necessities from.
Parrot rock is another must-visit attraction during your time in Mirissa. Famed for being the best viewpoint in Mirissa, Parrot Rock is a tiny little isle that sits just 50 meters from Mirissa Beach; which can only be accessed during low tide. Consider visiting around 7.00 am as the tide is low and you will get to enjoy a cooling morning breeze around you. One can also visit during mid-day, but temperatures can be scorching and there is no shelter on top of the rock.
Located at the very end of Mirissa Beach, Coconut Tree Hill is a great place to snap some Instagram-worthy shots! Covered in palm trees, the hill is a restful place to catch a sunset or sunrise for those so inclined. The hill can be reached within 10 to 15 minutes from the main Mirissa Beach.
Mirissa and its neighbouring town Weligama are renowned for their legendary surf. Those keen on learning how to surf should head to Weligama Beach. The best part is that there are plenty of reputed surf camps and schools where you can sign up for lessons. Weligama Beach lies just six to seven km from Mirissa and will require only a short tuk-tuk ride to get there. After your surf lessons, you can check out the chic seaside bars and restaurants that line the cove to grab a scrumptious seafood meal along with a couple ice cold beers or cocktails to beat the heat.
