Christmas Tree Safety Tips

The winter holidays are upon us and people in Utah take these holidays quite seriously. Unfortunately some people forget that while they deck the halls, they also need to remember to stay safe. Every year, fire departments respond to more than 200 fires caused by Christmas trees. By being careful when decorating your Christmas tree, your home will be a safe place during the holidays.

Artificial Trees

Make sure any artificial tree is labeled as being fire retardant.

Fresh Trees

If you pan on buying this years tree from any Utah Christmas tree lot, make sure it has green needles that do not fall off when touched. This will ensure that your home is safer.

Tree Stand

Cut one or two inches from the base of a fresh tree before placing it in a stand.

Keep from Flames

Place any Christmas tree at least three feet away from anything like a fireplace or candles to prevent an accidental fire.

Keep Exits in Mind

Be sure the tree isn’t blocking any exits. This way if any accidents do happen you have a safe escape out of your home.

Water

The Christmas tree should be watered daily to prevent dryness.

Right Lights

Some lights are for indoor use only and some are for outdoors, so make sure you choose the right kind.

Replace Worn Lights

If a string of lights has broken cords or bulbs, replace them to prevent a home fire.

Lights Out

Before you head out to any Christmas festivity in Utah or head to bed, make sure the Christmas lights have been turned off.

After Christmas

Throw out the tree or drop it off at any Utah dump when it starts to drop needs or gets dried out. This will remove any safety hazards it brings to your Utah home.
