The Maldives is a long and narrow archipelago stretching 820 km in length from north to south and 130 km wide at the broadest point formed by a cluster of natural atolls, isolated reefs, and several islands. Its altitude above sea level varies between 1.5 to 2.4 metres on different islands hence is constantly threatened by rising sea levels due to global warming. The 26 natural atolls in the archipelago are divided into 20 Administrative Atolls and each administrative atoll is governed by an atoll council which manages the resorts within that Administrative Atoll.
