Weligama in Sri Lanka is renowned for its surfing opportunities but you will also have the chance to engage in other activities such as relaxing on the beach, going on whale-watching excursions, exploring Koggala Lake and enjoying a beach party; suffice it to say, there is never a dull moment here!

1

Relax on the beach

In the environs of Weligama, you will encounter alluring sandy beaches which extend for miles. Naturally, it will be an appealing experience to spend a day basking in the sun on these entrancing shorelines. You will also have the opportunity to take a swim here, enjoy a boat ride or go snorkelling at Devil Rock where you could encounter stunning undersea scenery and many kinds of exotic sea creatures. Weligama also happens to be known for its amazing stilt fishermen; these fishermen will be an absorbing sight displaying great balance and skills as they fish in their unique manner.

2

Go whale watching

During your visit to Weligama you will have the chance to embark on a whale-watching expedition from Mirissa, a town located nearby. On one of these excursions, you may be able to observe the immense blue whales, in addition to other marine mammals such as pilot whales, Bryde’s whales, sperm whales and dolphins. The optimal season for this activity is from December to April at which time numerous sperm and blue whales visit the local waters on their migrations. You will also have the option of taking a private catamaran or speedboat whale-watching trip if you are so inclined.

3

Take a trip to Koggala Lake

Nature lovers will be enthralled by a visit to the picturesque Koggala Lake which you could experience during your exploration of destinations within easy reach of Weligama. At this lake, you would be able to undertake an enjoyable boat ride that will take you through the local mangrove ecosystems. Next, you could explore the charming Koggala village either on a tuk-tuk or a bicycle. You may also visit a cinnamon plantation where you could learn about the cultivation of this exotic variety of spice. A choice of accommodation to consider from which you could visit Koggala Lake and enjoy the other things to do in Weligama would be the attractively located Parangi Weligama Bay

Visit the Handunugoda Tea Estate

Although the southern region of Sri Lanka isn’t typically associated with tea cultivation – the island’s Central Province is more commonly known for tea production – you will have the opportunity to tour the engrossing Handunugoda Tea Estate located in proximity to Weligama. You will find that this tea estate is particularly known for the white tea – sometimes also called ‘Silvertips’ – that it produces. In the course of your visit, you will learn how this tea is cultivated and produced and even get to sample it.

Enjoy a beach party

After your sightseeing activities, you may relax and unwind by enjoying a lively party on the beach. Weligama boasts an interesting nightlife with numerous night-time options to be found in the environs of the town. You may take the opportunity to visit some of the bars to be found in the locality where you could mingle with fellow travellers, enjoy drinks and dance your cares away!
