Best Places to Visit in the Maldives - Dig deeper!

Maldives is blessed with incredible beauty, and with over 1000 islands to see, choosing where to go is tough. Here’s a quick guide to 6 hidden attractions in the Maldives.

1

Male - The largest city in Maldives

Situated in the North Malé Atoll, Malé is the largest city and the capital of the island nation. While it is often dismissed by many as a destination with little to offer, nothing could be further from the truth. Generally the first stop for all travellers, due to its proximity to the international airport, Male is the best place to soak up Maldivian culture and learn about its magnificent history. Spend a day exploring the local fish markets and national museums, or discover the ancient mosque, made entirely from coral blocks before heading back to one of the cosy budget water villas in Maldives.

2

Artificial Beach – Enjoy the carnival atmosphere

In a country which is famous for its amazing natural beaches, you wouldn’t expect to find a fake one, but that’s exactly what this is. Located in the North Malé Atoll, Artificial Beach is surprisingly a favourite destination for swimming enthusiasts who visit Maldives. Aside from the clear and calm waters, perfect for a relaxing swim, the beach also hosts several carnivals throughout the year, with many musical groups performing alongside the water daily. Do note that the beach is a public area, and certain dress codes are in place as per the local law.

3

HP Reef – Amazing corals and abundant marine life

Located near the north atolls in Male, HP Reef is rated as one of the top tourist destinations in the Maldives. A protected marine area, the reef is home to several coral reefs, in an array of stunning colours, giving rise to its other name, the rainbow reef. The soft, blue corals support an abundance of marine life, which includes schools of barracudas, large tunas, and rainbow runners. Eagle rays are commonly seen gliding through the waters looking for food, while grey reef sharks swim in these waters as well.

4

Biyadhoo Island

Another top-rated island, Biyadhoo Island is situated in the South Malé Atoll, close to the international airport and several resorts, such as the Embudu Village. Covering over 10 acres of land, the island has an abundance of lush greenery, including vegetation like bananas, mangoes and coconuts as well as cucumbers and tomatoes. It’s a popular spot for diving thanks to its crystal clear waters.

5

Utheemu Ganduvaru – The home of the first Sultan

Located in the Northern Maldives, Utheemu Ganduvaru is a small island with major historical significance in the Maldives; it is here that the first Sultan, Mohamed Thakurufaanu, was born and raised. The Sultan’s home is now a tourist attraction. If you are interested in knowing about the history and deep-rooted culture of Maldives, this might be a great place to visit as it will enlighten you and your loved ones about the beautiful place you are visiting to make memories!
