Best Vegan Restaurants in Shanghai, China – Delectable travels

Vegan restaurants are ubiquitous in Shanghai. But, if you’re a first-time visitor to the city, it’d be good to have a list of recommendations.  Whether you’re a sworn vegan or a curious carnivore, this list covers some of the best vegan restaurants in Shanghai.

1

Eat at the Green Vege Café

Green Vege Café is an all-vegan restaurant, located not too far away from most Shanghai Serviced Apartments. The third floor of the TOUCH Mall houses the café. Their tofu curry puffs, kale salad and chicken-less nuggets are famous as is their vegan mayo dip. They also serve a great soy latte. The menu is in English and Mandarin, hence it’s not difficult to order your favourite vegan fare. Green Vege Café is located within close proximity of most DiscoverASR properties in Shanghai.

2

Eat at the Huì Yuán SùShí Fāng

Located near the Dashijie subway station, Huì Yuán SùShí Fāng is spacious, and they can serve delectable fare to large groups around a round table. Their wontons and tofu fungus are heavenly. Their ‘ribs’ and dumpling dish with a nut sauce is one of their best sellers. Don’t forget to get a plain rice dish to go along with your main dishes. They even offer the chance to order via WeChat using a QR code.

3

Eat at the Duli

Duli is a plant-based fusion restaurant. They’ve perfected the mélange of Chinese and Western cuisine. Enjoy inspired dishes in a sophisticated environment. They serve mapo tofu hummus (just like what you find in Chengdu), gongbao pizza dandan gnocchi and prettily iced cakes. The hummus comes with pine nuts, cherry tomatoes, sauteed fresh greens and warm bread while the gnocchi are pan-fried. Dandan peanut sauce is always exquisitely flavoured and light. Their beverage list includes their signature Duli breeze mocktail, kombucha, pineapple juice and espresso.

4

Eat at If Vegan

Another all-vegan restaurant, salad bar and coffee place, ‘If Vegan’ is located in Shaanxi Bei, Jing An District. You can easily get there using the metro. They are open from 11 am to 9 pm but serve only coffee and cakes between 2 pm to 5 pm. Try their pumpkin with quinoa along with mustard and teriyaki eggplant. Then there is the fried tofu with ginger, grape juice, lemon and a side of wild rice. If you love unusual pizza, the mushroom and courgette pizza would delight your taste buds. Black pepper Lion's mane mushroom is another one of their unique dishes. For dessert, there is chocolate mousse cake, lemon cheesecake and chocolate ball. If you’re planning to order dessert, order along with the mains to give those scrumptious sweets time to defrost.

5

Eat at Dancing Dumpling

Dancing Dumpling is famous for its vegan/vegetarian dumplings. Along with these, they serve savoury pancakes, soup and various buns. The restaurant is located a little away from the city centre, but the journey is worth it. Order your dumplings and they serve you edamame and pickled tomatoes for you to munch on as you wait. Their sweet and sour fried chicken is made with tofu skin. Try the radish cake, and shepherd’s purse dumplings along with the ones filled with cabbage, corn and carrots for a memorable experience. If you visit during the autumn festival, they’ll throw in free mooncakes.

Eat at Green Friday

This vegan restaurant offers fusion fare. You can get a fattoush salad with pita, tempeh ciabatta, rice paper rolls, pumpkin ravioli and meatballs, chicken nuggets and burgers (all plant-based). Try their chickpea curry if you love a bit of spice and pair it with pear juice. They are famous for their vegan cheese and delicious tiramisu. Green Friday also serves cold brew coffee.
