5 Popular Events & Festivals in Maldives – Opportunities to Gain Cultural Insights

Away from its luxurious private island resorts, the Maldives has a rich culture, part of which are joyous events and festivals that are intertwined with various traditions, rituals, and activities. Here are five such events you should know about, some of which, you can experience on your visit as well.

1

Ramadan

Ramadan, the holy month of fasting and prayer, is when Muslims around the world abstain from food, drink, and other worldly pleasures from dawn to dusk. Not surprisingly, the Maldives, which is a Muslim nation, observes this time fervently as well. This period falls on the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and it’s a time marked by spiritual purification, self-discipline, charity, and devotion to Allah. A highlight is the breaking of the fast at sunset with a special meal (iftar). While many offices and sites of interest are closed at various times during the fasting period, private resorts remain open; they will also, usually offer iftar meals so guests can enjoy some of the festive foods associated with Ramadan.

2

Eid-Ul Fitr

Ramadan ends with the sighting of the new moon, which marks the beginning of the next month, Shawwal, and the joyous festival known as Eid al-Fitr or Kuda Eid. It celebrates the completion of the month-long fasting of Ramadan, and the gratitude to Allah for his blessings and guidance. On this day, Muslims dress in new clothes, perform a special prayer in the morning, engage in acts of charity, exchange greetings and gifts, and feast with their families and friends. In the Maldives, Eid al-Fitr is a public holiday that lasts for three days; people decorate their homes and streets and enjoy various cultural and entertainment activities as well.

3

Holy Prophet’s Birthday

The celebration of the birth of the Prophet Muhammad, also known as Mawlid or Mawlid un-Nabi, is another key festival that’s celebrated in the Maldives. Muslims believe that Prophet Muhammad was born on the 12th day of Rabi al-Awwal, the third month of the Islamic calendar though some, especially the Shia sect, celebrate his birthday on the 17th day of the same month. As you would expect, this day is a public holiday and a time to honour and praise Muhammad for his teachings and example. Traditions include reciting the Quran, engaging in street processions, listening to sermons and lectures about the life and achievements of the Holy Prophet and donating food to the poor.

4

National Fishermen's Day

National Fishermen’s Day in Maldives is celebrated on 10th December every year to recognise and appreciate the contribution of the fishing industry to the local economy and culture. Part of the Maldivian identity and heritage, fishing is the country’s second-largest industry after tourism, and a source of livelihood and food for many. Various events are held to celebrate the skills and achievements of fishermen, who brave the sea and weather each day. Interestingly, private resorts like OBLU SELECT Sangeli offer guests the option to try unique activities in Maldives such as traditional sunset fishing aboard a wooden Dhoni (boat) which makes for a truly enriching experience.

5

Independence Day

Independence Day in the Maldives observed on 26th July each year, marks the anniversary of the end of  British rule and the restoration of sovereignty and independence. The country became a British protectorate in 1887, after signing an agreement that gave the British control over local foreign affairs and defence, in exchange for non-interference in internal affairs and protection from external threats. This lasted till 26th July 1965 when the Maldives was granted full independence. Today, this day is a public holiday and a time to celebrate. The main events of the day include a flag-hoisting ceremony, a speech by the President, a parade by the security forces and school children, and various cultural and entertainment activities.
