Top useful tips for first-time travellers to the Maldives – Be informed to travel smart!

The Maldives is a destination of choice for visitors looking for a niche experience. Unparalleled beauty, understated luxury and undeniable stress relief are assured. As you are visiting the Maldives for the first time be aware of some insightful tips to be on top of things and enjoy it to the hilt.

1

Check the weather conditions

There are two distinct seasons in the Maldives, the dry season is from November to April (stable tropical weather with hardly any rain, even if it does rain it is a very brief shower). Thus, this period is preferred by most visitors to enjoy activities around the ocean. Underwater excursions of snorkelling or diving leave you mesmerized during this season. This is due to excellent visibility compelling visitors to book the best resorts in Maldives during this period. During the wet months of May to October showers are more frequent, however, they don’t last for long and the sun creeps through for you to still engage in many other activities.

2

Pack with care

Comfortable clothing and footwear suitable for a tropical country must be packed. This includes lightweight t-shirts or frocks, preferably in cotton, footwear including walking shoes and a pair of flip-flops. To ward off the harsh Ultra Violet rays from the skin, carry sunscreen or sunblock (which are reef-safe as most resorts are conscious about the sustainability of marine life). Sun hats and shades are a must too. A good underwater camera is useful for you to capture those awe-inspiring moments underwater, especially if you are planning to snorkel. Resorts such as Grand Park Kodhipparu Maldives are ideal as they have a house reef making it convenient to snorkel more often.

3

Select the most appropriate resort

In selecting the resort consider the planned duration of stay in the Maldives, your interests regarding the type of villa or bungalow you prefer such as overwater villa, beach villa etc. and the different activities and excursions you plan to experience during the stay. While most luxury resorts offer a superior service for their valued guests the activities and experiences may vary, hence look at the experiences and activities available before you decide on the resort.

4

Local culture and customs

As an Islamic nation, the Maldives appreciates modesty and conservativeness in dress and demeanour. When you arrive in the Maldives at Velana International Airport be mindful of arriving at a conservative country and be attired appropriately in a dress covering the knees, shoulders, and upper arms or even a trouser suit. Furthermore, carrying alcohol into the Maldives and consuming alcohol in inhabited areas of the Maldives is prohibited. Alcohol is served to the guests at the resorts.

5

Visit the Male Island

Upon request, most resorts arrange a day trip to Male, the capital city for visitors to gain insights into the rich Maldivian Heritage by visiting some historical sites like the Male Museum, Grand Friday Mosque, Old Presidential Palace, Victory Monument, Fish and vegetable Markets and the Souvenir Street. This is an ideal excursion to try on a first-time visit. As this is an inhabited island take care that your attire does not offend the feelings of your host nation.
