Service Design

The Nordic Conference on Service Design and Service Innovation, ServDes, is the premier research conference for exchanging knowledge within service design and service innovation. It was held for the first time in Oslo, November 24th – 26th 2009, hosted by the The Oslo School of Architecture and Design. From the 2010 event and on it will be a bi-annual event in the Nordic countries to bring researchers and practitioners together to discuss, share and evolve the emerging discipline of service design, and design-related service innovation.

This list represents a summary of the past thirty years of service design literature. The citations were compiled from the Emergence conference at Carnegie Mellon University as well as the Designing for Services project in the UK, service design syllabi at CMU and individual research. I've excerpted the abstracts and introductions to the papers and cross-referenced examples and concepts so that it's easy to follow the development of ideas such as "service blueprinting" across multiple papers.

The Service Design Network is an international network of organisations & businesses working in and developing the Service Design domain. Our purpose is to develop and strengthen the knowledge and expertise in the science and practice of innovation and improvement of services. Building a Service Design culture requires cooperation among disciplines, draws upon theories and practices to define a unique body of knowledge capable of addressing all the hard to soft aspects of the service. The SDN aims to develop and establish the Service Design discipline and professional identity.

It aims to collectively build an understanding and foster a dialogue on where ideas and concepts of Service Design have come from, how these evolved over the last two decades as well as report and review current research and service design practices. The motivation is to consolidate existing knowledge and to support the growth of a research community that engages in meaningful research relevant to the challenges design is dealing with today and in the future.

The project revolves around the themes of mobile learning, service design and the evolution of expertise. ServiceDesign project has been created to upgrade service design knowledge in Southern Finland and Estonia.
