Old Anglican Church

An excellent place at which to commence your tour of Zanzibar’s historical attractions is the fascinating Old Anglican Church which will draw the interest of the history lover. This cathedral which dates to 1873 was constructed by the initiative of a Bishop of Zanzibar, Edward Steere, who was also renowned for his anti-slavery abolitionist views. This place of worship which took a decade to construct is also known for its unusual barrel vault-shaped roof. Interestingly, Bishop Steere who passed away in 1882 was laid to rest behind the church’s altar.

Maruhubi Palace Ruins

History enthusiasts will also be enthralled by the remnants of the Maruhubi Palace which you will find in proximity to Zanzibar Town. This palace happens to be named in honour of its previous proprietor, an Arab of the tribe of Al-Marhuby. This formerly impressive edifice was constructed by order of Sultan Barghash to house his wife and concubines. Sadly, this imposing palace was devastated by a fire during the year 1899 though hints of its former grandeur can be still seen.

House of Wonders Museum

Another marvellous historical attraction in this city is the remarkable Beit el Ajaib or House of Wonders which dates to the latter part of the 19th century. Also constructed during the time of Sultan Barghash, this splendid edifice is regarded as one of East Africa’s most striking structures. Interestingly, this building was the region’s initial building to feature electricity as well as an electric elevator! Today, you will find a museum here that provides engrossing details regarding Zanzibar’s and the surrounding region’s rich culture and history.

Old Indian Dispensary
