Angkor Wat was designed to represent Mount Meru

The temple complex of Angkor Wat was originally built to honour the God Vishnu – which is why the design of the complex supposedly represents where he resided – Mount Meru. Interestingly the five towers of the complex represent the five peaks of Mount Meru. The moat and walls seen there on the other hand symbolise the sea and the surrounding mountain ranges.  While the Angkor Wat today is a Buddhist place of worship, it was a thriving Hindu temple that paid homage to God Vishnu.  Today Buddhism happens to be the main religion in Cambodia with over 97% of its population being Theravada Buddhists.

Angkor Wat was abandoned in 1431 and rediscovered in 1860

In 1431, the complex was sized by the Thai army, leading it to be abandoned by the many people living in the complex and in the vicinity. After which in 1860, a French naturalist – Henry Mouhout discovered it. After he published his discovery in his book, the site began gaining visitors from around the world intent on exploring the Temple City and learning its many secrets.
