How to explore Weligama

If exploring new towns is your goal when visiting a country, do not miss out on Weligama - the coastal paradise when you are in Sri Lanka. Surrounded by the Indian Ocean from all 4 sides, Sri Lanka is an island nation with a lot of amazing coastal towns, and each of them has a different vibe to adore.

Galle, Jaffna, Matara, Kalutara, Negombo and even Colombo are some coastal cities in Sri Lanka, that are famous among travellers. Ever heard of Weligama? It's an equally amazing city!

1

Weligama, Sri Lanka

Located in the Southern Province of Sri Lanka, Weligama belongs to the Matara District. It's a city with some extremely friendly people and, you feel their hospitality through the way they would come to you if you need any help. Thanks to properties such as Parangi Weligama Bay, the city has presently become popular among foreign travellers as well.

Traveling to Weligama

Where do you plan to come to Weligama from? If it's from Colombo, you surely have a lot of transportation modes. You can come to Weligama by train easily and the train ride will just be around 4.5 hours long. The second option is for those who won't prefer the train service in Sri Lanka. They have the option of catching a bus that leaves for Matara from the Fort bus station, and guess what... this bus ride can be quicker than the train ride. It will just take 3-4 hours for the whole journey, and if the bus you take is an A/C one that goes along the High Way, the ride will get much quicker.

Yes, you also have the option to take a taxi/cab from Colombo, but this option can be very expensive. When you come to Weligama, getting around the city is hassle-free as you have tuk-tuks for your assistance any time of the day.

Visit the beach first

First things first- a trip to Weligama is never complete without a visit to Weligama Beach. It's an unpolluted beach in the country, and of course, offers great sunset views. When you are there, don't just sit back and relax. Engage in some exciting water adventures and satisfy the adventurer in you, instead. Weligama Beach is great for surfing as well as scuba diving. There is also a diving centre here that offers PADI certification. The good thing is- this beach has ideal scuba diving spots for all kinds of explorers, ranging from beginners to experts.

Next - Weligama Bay

One of the most popular things to do in Weligama is to explore the bay which is very closely located to the beach. If you prefer calmness and tranquillity, this bay will be a perfect place for you to stop by. Do not fear to swim here, as it's very safe, and even your little ones may swim here without any risk.

How about visiting a tea estate then?

It's a fact that Sri Lanka is home to ever-precious Ceylon Tea. Many people think that it's just in the Central Hills that tea is grown in Sri Lanka, but that's quite a misconception. You also find some good tea estates in the Southern part of the country, and the Handunugoda Tea Estate is one such. This beautiful tea estate is in Mirissa, and from Weligama to Mirissa, it will only be a ride of a few minutes.

Explore how the workers of this tea estate do their job so passionately and don't forget to have a small chat with them when you are here. As there are shops available to sell the finest tea to you, you may also get some as a souvenir.
