7 Waterfalls in Kandy for a Phenomenal Getaway- Immerse in the natural beauty of the hill country.

Kandy District is located in the Central Province of Sri Lanka and has a range of beautiful waterfalls to explore. The hill capital and its neighbouring, Matale District is known for its natural beauty and verdant mountain peaks, where many stunning waterfalls lie hidden.

1

Hunnas Falls

One of the best places to visit in Kandy is Hunnas Falls, also called Hunnasgiriya Falls, is hidden in the rural village of Elkaduwa 22 km from Kandy in the Matale District. Popular with locals and honeymooners, it is among the most stunning waterfalls in this region. To reach Hunnas Falls, you can take either two routes, one from Matale to Elkaduwa, or via Wattegama to Elkaduwa. The waterfall lies at an elevation of 1,765 metres above sea level, lying in the exquisitely landscaped garden of the Hunnasgiriya Hotel and is fed by a stream from the Hunnasgiriya Mountain Range.

2

Rathana Ella

Rathana Ella is situated in the town called Hasalaka in the Kandy District. The region encircling the waterfall is green and beautiful and surrounded by lush paddy cultivations. Rathana Ella is very significant to the villagers, as it provides water for agricultural purposes for the villagers living close to the waterfall. This waterfall is also considered the widest in Sri Lanka and in the past, villagers constructed a small anicut to draw water from Rathana Ella for agricultural purposes. To get there, travel along the Kandy-Mahiyangane-Padiyatalawa Road via Pallekele, Digana, Teldeniya, Ududumbara and Gurulupotha to reach Hasalaka. From there, travel approximately 2 km on the Hasalaka-Eldamporuwa Road to Rathna Ella Falls. For more inspiration on where to travel in and around Kandy, check out websites like Kandy Escapes.

Galboda Falls

You can discover this waterfall along the railway track between Colombo and Badulla. It is accessible only by train, and there is no road system connecting the waterfall. Get on a train from Kandy to Badulla and get off at Galboada Station. From there, there is a trek lasting 20 to 25 minutes from the station. Galboda is 30 metres in height and has a width of 3 m to 6 m.

4

Sudugala Falls

Situated 40 km from Kandy, this waterfall is on the Samanalagama Road towards Nawalapitiya, close to the Heightenford railway station. Some call it the Heightenford Falls or Galpoththa Ella Falls. The location of this waterfall is stunning and creates a somewhat shallow pool around 2 feet in depth.
