05 Things To Do In Tangalle Beach - Tangalle and beyond

While Tangalle is one of the most popular beaches in Sri Lanka, there is not much one can do here. However, if your goal on your next holiday is lazing in the sun and enjoying some peace and quiet at the beach, this is one of the best destinations for you! Here's how you can enjoy the beach when you visit Tangalle.

1

Relax at the beach

Let's begin with the main section of Tangalle Beach which is located towards the western part of the bay. When you hang out here, you'll find that there are plenty of sunbeds for you to relax on and plenty of little cafes and restaurants along the beach too if you feel the need to grab a bite to eat. This is also the larger section of the coast which is on the crowded side as there are more businesses than hotels. However, if what you need is a bit of secluded bliss, head east through Vijaya Road where there are more resorts, the beach here is quiet and perfect for some private moments with your loved one. This part of Tangalle Beach is the best place to be if you happen to visit during the high season to avoid the crowds. For waters that are calm and provide ideal swimming conditions, visit Paraiwella Beach Park which is also great to hang out with family.

Visit Silent Beach

Not far from the town of Tangalle is a stretch of beach that one can describe as absolutely untouched by tourism! There are no resorts, cafes or restaurants to attract people, just naturally maintained golden sands with a few rocks here and there and beautiful turquoise waters lapping against the shores. What's more? There is also a rope swing for a bit of quirky fun at the beach! Spend a quiet morning in the company of the waves and feel like you've been transported away from the chaos of the world during your visit to Silent Beach.

Observe the baby turtles

Recommended by resorts like Anantara Peace Haven Tangalle Resort, visiting Rekawa Beach on the eastern part of the bay is one of the best things to do in Tangalle. Rekawa Beach is less crowded and it is also a protected breeding ground for turtles. From April to July, these creatures of the ocean arrive at these shores to lay their eggs. During this time, hundreds of turtle eggs hatch and visitors are allowed to watch these little baby turtles make it to the ocean. It is a wonderful and inspiring sight and is a much-loved activity among the tourists who visit the beach.

Water activities to indulge in

If you need to add a bit of excitement to your stay in Tangalle, why not take the chance to indulge in snorkelling, diving or kayaking? Explore this emerald lagoon on a kayak, which you can rent from hotels or beach rentals on the coast. You can also snorkel around here as the waters are clear. If you are interested in a diving excursion, arrange a tour with the Tangalle Dive Centre.

Explore beyond Tagalle

If you plan on visiting beyond Tangalle, Hiriketiya Beach is yet another very popular place to visit for some amazing moments on the beach. Visitors can enjoy the cafes and bars that line the shores and simply relax with a bit of sun, sand and sea. To witness a wonder of nature, consider visiting Hummanaya Blowhole, being the second largest blowhole in the world, the water here shoots up 80 ft into the air on monsoon days.
