While the neighbouring Surat Thani province may claim ownership of Khao Sok National Park, making the hour's drive from the town of Khao Lak to the sprawling nature reserve wouldn't be in vain, for it is a fantastic nature and adventure experience that never fails to delight both locals as well as tourists to the seaside region. The 740 square kilometres of dense virgin jungle is home to multifarious flora and fauna, where rare and elusive species such as hornbill birds, gibbons, tigers and the giant parasitic Rafflesia flower are among the highlights. While nature and wildlife lovers are sure to be enchanted, adventure enthusiasts aren’t also left dissatisfied as the park’s 9 different hiking trails and the range of activities, including elephant-back safari and the exploration of Sok River by raft, canoe or kayak, are exhilarating, to say the least.
