6 Famous & Talented Artists in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka has been long known for its amazing culture. One way through which the culture can be best showcased is through arts and crafts. So, why not get to know some of the most talented artists in Sri Lankan who have done so much for the upliftment of their respective fields? Read on.

1

Nawi Samaraweera

For those who are familiar with the collections at Sri Lankan Art Gallery, Nawi Samaraweera is not a new name. He is considered an artist who tries to illustrate the past, while also comparing it with the present. His father is a wood-carving artist, so his work also has been influenced by the same to a greater extent. The best thing about Nawi is that his work evolves. This is why he has recently experimented with digital paintings on iPads.

2

Jayasiri Semage

Have you explored the beauty of the Lumbini Temple Mural? It's a religious mural done by the famous artist- Jayasiri Semage. He always, through his work, tries to combine traditional beliefs and way of life with modernism, and he has truly succeeded in that. Even when he showcases a Buddhist scenario (a scenario from the life of Lord Buddha), his vibe of 'celebrating life' is prominent and this is so unique.

3

Dinusha Upasena

Dinusha is one of the most popular Sri Lankan artists who has always questioned the beauty of things. Through his paintings, he first brings out the beauty, but then lets the audience see the dark side reality of all fantasies. Reds, pinks and yellows are mostly used in his paintings to showcase the brighter sides. The reality is deep and disturbing- this is what he strives to explain!

4

Isuri Dayaratne

If you are a fan of comic art, you should already know who Isuri Sayaratne is. Her pieces of illustrations are strong, and of course so bold. Colombo has many high-end restaurants that feature her art, and they are all amazing. Her sense of humour is crystal clear with what she does, and yes- they are smart enough to take you to a fantasy world.

5

David Paynter

If an art lover is asked to name a painter who changed the whole art industry in Sri Lanka in the 1920s, the name 'David Paynter' will surely be one of the answers. He has been influenced a lot by the French, Italian and British art cultures, and he has tried establishing the same in Sri Lanka. The chapel of Trinity College has one of his paintings, and this can be named as one of his very first efforts to revolutionise the art field in Sri Lanka.

6

Lionel Wendt

An artist is a multi-talented individual and this great artist 'Lionel Wendt' has proved this fact. He was a great pianist, photographer, and at the same time, a well-known literature collector. He always trusted that the Sri Lankan lifestyle and traditions were unique, and tried to portray this message to the world through his work.
