6 Must-Try Drinks on Your Holiday in the Maldives – Diverse and Enticing Beverages to Sip and Savour

Visitors to the Maldives would have the opportunity to enjoy a variety of delicious drinks, including fresh fruit juice, coconut water, tea, ruku raa, cocktails and mocktails and more; there would almost certainly be beverages that would appeal to every visitor to the islands.

1

Fresh fruit juice

As you might expect in a tropical island nation, freshly obtained fruit juice would be a very popular beverage choice in the Maldives. Whilst bottled juice would also be available here, obviously, fresh juice would be a much more appealing choice. Pineapple, papaya, mango and watermelon juices would be counted among the in-demand choices. Additionally, many locals would also enjoy lime juice as a refreshing thirst-quencher. Of course, another reason to enjoy such beverages is that fruits would also offer numerous health-related benefits.

2

Coconut water

Another iconic drink in the Maldives is the commonly available coconut water; you will see that there are palm trees virtually anywhere you look and it may be said that your tropical island holiday would be incomplete without enjoying this satisfying drink. Naturally, the best way to enjoy this drink would be to order a coconut from a seller – who would open the fruit and insert a straw – and drink straight out of the coconut. Coconut water would also be healthy, providing useful antioxidants and promoting hydration and digestion as well.

3

Tea

Tea would be a much-loved beverage amongst the native Maldivians, who would typically consume vast quantities of this drink. You will find that tea would perfectly complement the snacks which the locals enjoy during the evening, which are known as 'hedhikaa'. The majority of the locals would consume black tea, which would be referred to as ‘kalhu sai’, while with the addition of milk, it would be called ‘kiru sai’. Interestingly, milk would mostly be available in powdered form in this country as there would be no cows here!

4

Ruku raa

Another authentic Maldivian speciality would be 'ruku raa', often simply called 'raa'. This distinctive drink would be the sap or toddy obtained from the oldest flowers found on palm trees. The majority of the locals would like to consume this beverage in fresh form, although there would be those who would prefer to let it ferment for a while. A note-worthy fact is that each of the inhabited islands would have an official toddy tapper who would be responsible for collecting this distinctive drink.

5

Mocktails and cocktails

You could readily enjoy alcoholic drinks at private resorts (keep in mind that drinking alcohol at local islands is prohibited) which would often recruit the world’s most talented bartenders. There would also be several well-known cocktails and mocktails that are often associated with this island nation. Amongst these would be the well-known Maldivian Lady, Biyadhoo Special, Sting Ray, Raa Atoll Classic and so on. One of the all-inclusive hotels in Maldives to consider where you could enjoy unlimited cocktails, mocktails and other drinks as part of its package would be VARU by Atmosphere.

6

Wine and beer

The majority of the Maldives resorts would feature a good selection of beers including well-known brands like Corona, Carlsberg, San Miguel and other popular choices such as Erdinger, Tiger, Heineken and more. On the other hand, when it comes to wine, not all of the resorts would feature an extensive selection; that said, you will get some resorts that boast extensive wine cellars featuring thousands of wine bottles from different vintages to choose from.
