5 Must-visit Beaches in the South - An enticing vacation for beach lovers!

If you're the type of person who can spend hours on the beach, playing, tanning or simply relaxing away, the beaches in the South of Sri Lanka will not disappoint. Here are a few of the most pristine beaches to check out!

Tangalle Beach

A city that is very much becoming a tourist favourite, Tangalle boasts a number of sites to visit such as the Hummanaya blowhole, Kalametiya Bird Sanctuary and the Parewella Natural swimming area. These spots are not too far away from the town! Tangalle is a great beach destination, with miles of shoreline lined with lush palm trees, plenty of sunlight and gorgeous sandy coasts.

Bentota Beach

The coastal town of Bentota is a quick drive away from Colombo, therefore, is more than perfect for a day out. If you're travelling with family and kids, spending a day in this serene, easily accessible and family-friendly beach is the way to go! You can rent a vehicle for the day, as travel time from Colombo to Bentota is a mere 1 hour 30 minutes.

Weligama Beach

Weligama is a much-loved beach stretch in the southern province of Sri Lanka. It is a great fusion of a thriving fishing community, tourism, and a beach destination. Weligama is known for its stilt fishermen, who fish while perched on poles in the water, which is said to have originated from southern Sri Lanka. While this type of fishing is no longer a common sight, it is surely one you must capture if you see it! While you're there, you might also wish to check out some of the nearby attractions, such as a snake farm and shops selling locally made lace.

Mirissa Beach

Among Mirissa attractions, you'll find that the beach is at the very top of the list. It is largely known for being a superb beach for whale viewing. Whale watching allows tourists a different perspective to witness these majestic marine creatures out in the ocean! Mirissa is also a very well-known surfing beach so you must seize the opportunity to rent a surfboard and cruise the waves, putting your surfing skills to the test in the fresh blue southern waters of Sri Lanka. Hikkaduwa Beach

Also in southern Sri Lanka, you'll come across the small village of Hikkaduwa. Known for its amazing surfing location, Hikkaduwa is said to be Sri Lanka's second-best beach for surfing! Today, Hikkaduwa brims with tourists and locals on vacation, having become an extremely popular beach vacation favourite on the island. Hikkaduwa had small beginnings, originally as a fishing village. A few miles offshore is the Hikkaduwa Coral Sanctuary, where a wide variety of beautiful multicoloured corals can be found, and you can try your hand at snorkelling and witnessing the wonders of the underwater world. Make sure to not forget your sunglasses and sunscreen when you're out and about!
