The island of Sri Lanka may be tiny but it’s certainly mighty when it comes to the huge range of diverse landscapes that it has to offer in terms my its stunning beaches, verdant mountain rangers, and rolling tea plantations. Read on to discover five of the most beautiful places in Sri Lanka you must visit in 2023.

1

Sigiriya Rock Fortress

Among the more popular things to do in Sri Lanka include climbing the Sigiriya Rock Fortress! This attraction is an ancient rock fortress, is situated in the northern Matale District, near the town of Dambulla. Once the magnificent capital of King Kassapa is a massive granite peak that stands at a whopping 180 m high and dominates the lush jungles around it. Points of interest here are many and include a staircase carved out of stone that emerges from the mouth of a gigantic lion which provides access to the site, a series of galleries, and beautifully terraced gardens and ponds.

2

  Yala National Park

The Yala National Park which happens to be the most visited and second largest one on the island, straddles the rugged southeastern coastline and spans over 1268sq km. Consisting of five blocks, the Yala National Park is renowned for its high density of leopards with approximately 30 or more of these big cats calling this park home. Other kinds of animals you will be able to observe include large herds of elephants, monkeys, crocodiles, sloth bears, and deer. Hotel chains such as the likes of Browns Hotels & Resorts will be more than happy to arrange for a visit upon the requests of their guests.

3

Galle Fort

Founded and built in the 16th century by the Portuguese, and later fortified by the Dutch, the Galle Fort remains one of the best historical examples of a fortified city built by Europeans in South-East Asia; beautifully showcasing the union of South Asian traditions and European architectural styles. Interestingly the Fort also happens to be one of the only living UNESCO World Heritage sites in the world. Things to do here include visiting and checking out chic concept stores such as Orchid Houe, Barefoot, and Stick No Bills, walking along the fort ramparts, and dining at any one of the fort’s wide range of fantastic restaurants and cafes. Don’t forget to check out The Galle Fort Lighthouse, the Dutch Reformed Church, and the Maritime Archaeological Museum.

4

Nuwara Eliya

Fondly referred to as Sri Lanka’s, ‘Little England,’ Nuwara Eliya is a city located amidst the rolling and cool climes of the island’s central highlands. Featuring stunning waterfalls, beautifully misty mountain ranges, and lush green vales made up of tea bushes, Nuwara Eliya offers the ultimate escape from the scorching heat and dust of the island’s coast.

5

Mirissa

Hands down one of the most popular beach destinations on the island, the little town of Mirissa offers perfect beaches to kick back and relax, fantastic waves to take on with your surfboard in tow,  and an abundance of fresh seafood. Plus, it's also a great place to go whale watching, as the waters around it routinely attract blue and sperm whales.
