05 Things to do in Lesotho – Have yourself an adventure unlike any other in South Africa’s, ‘Kingdom in the Sky'

Surrounded by South Africa, beautiful Lesotho has long since been known as the Kingdom in the Sky, since this country sits at a stunning altitude of over 1000 meters. Your holiday in Lesotho promises to include glorious waterfalls, rich culture, stunning mountain views and abundant wildlife. Keen to get a head start on planning your Lesotho vacation? Then here are the top activities to do while there!

1

Pony trekking in Lesotho

One of the best ways to explore Lesotho is by pony! Opting to go pony trekking through Lesotho, will take you across the country’s pristine mountain ranges (both low and highlands) to really immerse yourself in Lesotho culture and discover more about Basotho people. During your treks, you will come across many locals still living in simple stone and thatch huts just like their ancestors did many years ago. Pony treks usually range from two hours to a full week. Hotels such as the likes of Avani Lesotho Hotel & Casino will be more than happy to arrange for a trekking experience upon the request of their guests.

2

Hiking

Another popular activity among the things to do in Lesotho is to go hiking. Home to rugged, mountainous, and incredible science beauty, Lesotho is truly a hiker’s paradise. The best thing is that intrepid travellers and adventurous can pretty much camp and hike anywhere in Lesotho as the country boasts various nature reserves and national parks such as Sani Pass, Bokong Nature Reserve, Sehlabathebe National Park, and Ts’ehlanyane National Park. Deciding on your hiking trails depending on your experience as a hiker is highly recommended.

3

Water sports

Apart from the mesmerising mountain rangers, hiking trails and more, Lesotho is also home to an abundance of rivers, lakes, and waterfalls. Its Katse D (the highest dam in Africa) and Mohale Dam in particular offer plenty of opportunities to enjoy fun water sports. For trout fishing, small boat sailing, white water rafting or kayaking consider the Senqu River.

4

Experience the Basotho culture

The native inhabitants of Lesotho are the Basotho people, who speak the national language of Sesotho. The Basotho people have a unique culture, and their villages are often located high up on mountains. Traditionally the Bosotho people are agriculturists, and they cultivate crops such as wheat, maize, sorghum, and a variety of vegetables such as cabbages and onions. During your visit to a local Basotho village, you will get the opportunity to join them in their daily routines, learn more about their history and much more.

5

Skiing

Skiing in Lesotho promises to be a memorable affair! The best time to do so is between May and August. Do keep in mind that the snow on the ski slopes of Lesotho is not packed tight and can often be icy. So, conditions can be a bit dangerous. If your skiing experience is not proficient, it's best to start off on a couple of dry slopes. Do make it a point to check the weather conditions prior to arranging a visit. Regardless of whether you are planning on skiing or not, the area is absolutely beautiful to take in with a mountain walk proving to be invigorating and refreshing!
