Seven Festivals in Bangkok - Get on a train of traditions!

In Bangkok, festivals are the city's most joyful events. When visiting Bangkok during these months, you may get into the festive spirit with the locals and join in holiday events. Read on to see which ones you must not miss!

The King's Birthday

A public holiday also celebrated as Father's Day, this festival is celebrated on December 5th. This is a holiday that is observed throughout the country. King Bhumibol Adulyadej was the world's longest-reigning king, having been crowned on June 9, 1946, and was adored, largely due to his commitment to the welfare of the people. This is a significant day, and the people show their respect and admiration for the King. On this day, all residents in Thailand fly yellow flags and adorn their houses with lights.

Songkran

Songkran is Thailand's New Year, which is celebrated in April. The main way in which it is celebrated is by throwing water at one another! From April 13th to April 15th, you will witness locals pelt each other with buckets of water. Foreigners will enjoy the summer splash and acquire a one-of-a-kind experience by taking part in this celebration. On this day, people visit their elderly relatives to express their gratitude as well.

Loy Krathong

Every country has its own celebration of lights, and this is Thailand's. Held every November, it is observed across Thailand. In Thai, krathong refers to a banana trunk adorned with flowers, incense, leaves, and candles. Loy is a Thai word that means "to float". These Krathongs are floating to express respect for rivers because agriculture is Thailand's primary occupation, and this event is very important. Candle Festival

This festival is exactly what you think it is. For this event, several wax statues depicting Buddhist mythology are constructed, along with numerous boats decked out with flowers, which float down the river. These boats are used by locals to gather candles from the public and dedicate them to shrines. In addition to these traditional steps, the day is filled with competitions. You will notice many colourful processions in Bangkok and other cities!

Chinese New Year

Chinese New Year is a time of joyous festivities and vibrant celebrations! The bustling streets of Bangkok come alive with mesmerising dragon dances and captivating performances during this auspicious period. Chinatown is attractively illuminated and throughout the day, there are dancing activities. You will also find enormous discounts on practically every establishment in Bangkok. The one thing not to miss would be the delightful Chinese feasts.

Lantern Festival

Also known as Yo Cheng, Lantern Festival is a one-of-a-kind experience. The sky is lit up with sky lanterns all night long, making it seem like you're in a Disney movie. This festival dates back to ancient times, and carries great significance in Thailand's culture.

Lopburi Monkey Festival

Lopburi is a province located on the city's northern outskirts, with numerous tourist attractions, ruins, palaces, and of course, monkeys! On this day, monkeys congregate for all the treats and feasts that are presented to them. Throughout the event, there are several live acts that incorporate monkeys. It is also said that feeding monkeys on this day brings good luck.
