5 Best Things to Do in Ella, Sri Lanka- Discover the beauty of Ella

Ella is a much-loved hillside village in the Badulla District. It is a favorite spot for many due to the cold weather, beautiful scenery, and natural breathtaking views. It is the ideal hiking territory.

1

Climb the stupendous Ella Rock

The Ella Rock climb is one of the best things to do in Ella and one of the most prominent trails for visitors to Ella. The hike takes around three hours to complete, but one will barely notice the time going by. Trekking along the lush, misty mountainous landscape will be a treat. Your trekking path will include green tea plantations and breathtaking views. At sunrise, the summit is magical!

2

Pose near The Nine Arches Bridge

One of the most famous attractions in Ella is the Nine Arches Bridge, which is between Ella and Demodara Station. It was built during the British colonial period to transport tea to Colombo. During its construction at the height of World War I, its engineers ran out of steel. The local builders, however, resumed building using stone and bricks to finish the project. The outcome of that ingenuity is the unique nine-arched bridge. A famous landmark for photo hunters, who are in for some lovely pictures overlooking the impressive bridge. You can sight the train crossing the bridge daily, twice a day.

3

Sunrise at the Little Adams Peak

The hike to Little Adams Peak is a faster trek and will take around 50 to 60 minutes. The hiking path once again will take you through lush tea plantations and exquisite mountain terrain. The summit is stunning with a little shrine for the Lord Buddha marking the spot. The sunrise trek will be incredible! With the dawning sunlight bathing the surrounding mountains and villages as far as the eye can see. If you are up for more excitement following the hike, the zip line, 'Flying Ravana', is also within the premises. It will take you right across some of the misty mountains and forests seen from the summit. Other activities include ATV/quad bike rides, abseiling, archery and air rifling.

4

Dhowa Rock Temple

When you Travel to Ella, don't bypass the little-visited Dhowa Rock temple, which is said to be over 2000 years old! There is a massive 39 feet unfinished statue of the Buddha, and several murals and rock art available for all to see. Encircled by green hills, the peace and tranquillity of this temple is palpable. The temple monks will be happy to give an account of this ancient temple filled with many local legends. Apparently, a secret network of subterranean tunnels connects the temple with the Ravana Falls!

5

Ravana Falls

This stunning waterfall is named after the legendary King of Sri Lanka, Ravana of the Ramayana fame. You can get there within 10-15 minutes from Ella by car or tuk-tuk. According to the tale, once Ravana kidnapped Sita, he hid her behind the many caves of the waterfall and built her a magnificent underground palace. The waterfall is 82 feet and can be climbed up to its third tier, a worthy climb but be wary of the slippery rocks!
