05 tips for what to wear in Sri Lanka – For a comfortable holiday in the tropics!

Planning a visit to Sri Lanka for the first time? With an abundance of sunshine, endless blue skies and delightfully vibrant scenery, the little island of Sri Lanka is a true tropical paradise well worth exploring. Most of the time however stepping outside into the island’s muggy, sticky and rather stifling humid weather of the island can be unpleasant and take away from your holiday. Here are five tips to dress appropriately for Sri Lankan weather!

1

Wear loose clothing

One of the best ways to really improve your comfort in high humidity is to wear lightweight clothing that hangs slightly off your frame and won’t cling to your skin. Fabrics with texture or organically woven fabrics such as French linen will do a good job in this aspect. It's best to avoid clothing items that cling to the skin and soak up sweat as this will not only amplify discomfort but could very well result in a dreaded heat rash. Look for items of clothes which are loose fitting, breathable and preferably linen. However, if you plan on travelling to the cooler climes of the island’s central highlands – it’s a must to pack warm knits to stave off the cold. Especially if one plans to take in Nuwara Eliya points of interest and sign up for a typical tea and experience factory life in the region.

2

Wear quick-drying clothes

If you are planning on engaging in adventurous activities and doing plenty of exploring, it’s a good idea to pack quick-drying clothing. While quick-drying clothing won’t eliminate humidity entirely, the faster your shirts and pants dry when soaked with sweat or water, the less time you will be spending in damp clothing.

3

Pack plenty of scarves, sarongs, and beachwear

The colourful tropics and the beautiful beaches of Sri Lanka definitely call for plenty of chic beach wear and sarongs to lounge in style. If excess weight is an issue when packing these items, there are plenty of swimwear stores in and around the island where you can purchase trendy beachwear. If you plan on visiting certain religious sites, do note to carry along a sarong or scarf as one is not allowed to enter if your shoulders and knees are exposed.

4

Comfortable footwear

When it comes to footwear in Sri Lanka, look for comfortable flip-flops or sandals. However, if you plan on doing a lot of trekking or hikes, then it’s a must to bring along appropriate footwear to avoid injuries and ensure comfort.

Things to keep in mind

When it comes to planning what to wear during your holiday in Sri Lanka, remember to pack light as you can always get your clothes laundered.  Lightweight clothing in natural breathable fabrics such as linen, silk and cotton will serve you well. Additionally, light-coloured clothing too works best to reflect the sun. Don’t forget to pack plenty of reef-safe sunscreens, wide-brimmed sun hats and pair of UV sunglasses to protect your skin and eyes from the harsh rays of the sun.
