Terracotta Army is the most famous tourist attraction in Xi'an, and no family trip to this region of China would be complete without exploring this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Dating back centuries, the terracotta warriors found at the venue were meant to accompany their leader, the emperor Qin Shi Huang, into the afterlife. What makes these terracotta figures unique is that each soldier is different to the other in terms of appearance as facial features, hairstyle, weaponry and other features set them apart.
Considered one of the most fascinating cultural highlights in Xi'an, the Muslim Quarter is a collection of labyrinthine streets that are situated to the west and north of the iconic Drum Tower in Xi'an. Muslim Quarter offers families a great venue to shop, wine and dine and go sightseeing, and the best time to head to this part of Xi'an is after nightfall. While it is easy to get lost in this maze-like area, every street has something different and engaging to offer.
What sets Xi'an apart from other Chinese tourist hubs is the large number of Muslim restaurants in the city. While families may be tempted to stick to the local McDonalds, it is far more rewarding to dine at one of these Muslim family restaurants where the menu is far more extensive and includes a wide variety of Chinese delicacies and favourites. Inexpensive and delicious, the treats on offer at Muslim eateries in Xi'an are hard to beat.
Those travelling with kids must also head to the Muslim Night Market for a souvenir shopping spree. Retailing everything under the sun for unbelievably cheap price points, the Muslim Night Market is a great place to pick up toys, clothes, accessories and local snacks.
Don't forget to pop by the fish spas at the Muslim Night Market where kids and adults alike can sign up for a pedicure session where tiny fish feed on the dead skin of one's feet. Parents with tired feet can also get a good foot massage at these spas.
Those based at Grand Park Xian and other family-friendly hotels in Xian must also pay a visit to the city's Bell Tower and Drum Tower. The former is located near a central roundabout while the Drum Tower is also located nearby. These towers are easily accessible via the pedestrian tunnels leading to both towers underneath the street, and families can buy combo tickets to tour both highlights.
Nature lovers, on the other hand, can head to Huashan for a hiking experience they won't soon forget. This steep trek, however, is better suited for families with older kids or teens as hiking up the 6000 steps can be a challenge for those with toddlers.
