The Top 5 Dishes to Try During Your Visit to Phuket — Classic Thai Dishes

Phuket is famous for many pleasures, among which food takes prominence. As a popular holiday hub, the island is well known for its selection of classic Thai dishes that are made with the right balance of flavours. Check out this list of must-try cuisines during your visit to Phuket.

1

The All-Time Favourite Pad Thai

This dish is a favourite among tourists and is sold at just about every street corner kiosk, especially the night markets. Pad Thai is a noodle dish that has many additions such as peanuts, herbs, spices, soybeans, and sugar. It is not too spicy, which is why it's more of a tourist favourite. Some of the best versions of this salty, sweet, and highly flavoursome dish are served at top restaurants in Phuket and most of them are located within popular beach resorts on the island. Places like the Talad restaurant located at Avani+ Mai Khao Phuket Suites & Villas are popular for top street food dishes and may be worth a visit, especially if you are an in-house guest.

2

Tom Yam Goong

This perfect comfort food is a seafood soup with the ideal balance of flavours that's good for the soul. Lemongrass, kefir lime leaves, galangal and chilli add loads of flavour to the prawns, cuttlefish and other types of seafood that make up the ingredients in Tom Yam Goong.

3

Khao Pad Kai

This is a popular rice dish that is widely available throughout the country. The dish can be ordered with a side of pork, chicken or prawns and comes with sliced cucumber. You eat it with a drizzle of a tangy fish sauce called prik nampla, which is enhanced with spicy chillies. This is one authentic Thai dish you must try when browsing the local Phuket restaurants, or when visiting the in-house restaurants at your Phuket resort.

4

Thai Green Curry

This one is famous the world over, but you must try the authentic version when visiting Phuket or any other destination in Thailand. Gaeng Keow Wan Gai is the local name for the dish, which contains eggplant and Turkey berry (a type of wild eggplant that's as small and green as regular peas). Both types of eggplant soak up the curry well to make them very juicy and it is the ideal accompaniment to a bowl of steamed rice.

5

Krapow Moo

Fried pork (moo) basil is the name of this dish in English and it can be ordered with chicken (kai) or beef (nua). The meat is cooked with chillies, spices and leaves of holy basil. The concoction is eaten on a bed of steamed rice and a side of crispy fried egg. Krapow Moo can be quite spicy so you need to make sure you disclose your preferences at the time of ordering. The phrase for "not too spicy" in Thai is "mai pet".
