Indigenous Wild Animals in Hong Kong – Fascinating Creatures of the Wilderness

Wildlife lovers visiting Hong Kong have the opportunity to observe several kinds of indigenous creatures such as the porcupine, pink dolphin, macaque, leopard cat and more.

1

 Porcupine

You may be able to spot the Malayan or East Asian porcupine whilst hiking in Hong Kong, although they habitually sleep during the daytime. You know that one of these creatures is nearby by the distinctive rustling sound of its quills. As porcupines typically go around in couples, if you happen to spot one you will be likely to find its mate nearby. Porcupines could often be spotted at localities like Bowen Road, The Peak and Black’s Link.

Pink dolphin

An appealing sight in the waters of Hong Kong is the eye-catching Chinese white dolphin which is often known as the pink dolphin due to its distinctive colour. It is estimated that there would be about 2,500 of these dolphins left in the wild, making them an endangered variety. These endearing creatures can be spotted at the Pearl River Estuary in the environs of Lantau Island, Sha Chau Marine Park, Lung Kwu Chau and so on. Although a number of operators offer boat excursions for spotting pink dolphins, they might be detrimental to the well-being of the dolphins.

3

Macaque

The majority of monkeys to be seen in Hong Kong would be rhesus macaques which have greatly increased in numbers at Kam Shan in recent times. Although it is now against the law to feed these creatures, the macaques may attempt to grab any food you might be carrying. However, the monkeys at Shing Mun Reservoir would be more sedate, so you could probably observe them without any problematic incidents.

4

Leopard cat

The beautiful leopard cat is an elusive feline accustomed to a solitary lifestyle in rainforests and woodlands. Unfortunately, these attractive creatures have been badly impacted by illegal trading, being targeted for their lovely fur and by those who desire to keep them as glamorous pets. Although leopard cats happen to be found in many localities in Hong Kong, you would be unlikely to encounter one in a wild setting. You could however view these elegant creatures at the Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden.

5

 Wild boar

Viewing wild boar is another captivating experience for the wildlife lover visiting Hong Kong. You will find that these intriguing creatures are naturally shy, only venturing near human settlements if they happen to be very short of food. Generally, wild boars are aggressive if they are not provoked; however a female with young may be highly protective of its little ones. Wild boars could be spotted in proximity to The Peak, Repulse Bay, Lung Fu Shan and so on. One of the Tsim Sha Tsui hotels to consider from which you could easily visit The Peak would be Park Hotel Hong Kong.

6

Civet

Another interesting creature of the wild that you may spot in Hong Kong would be the small Indian civet, although you would probably have to go hiking in the wilderness at night to do so. A related animal would be the masked palm civet, which would be even more elusive. If you do encounter one you should avoid alarming it as it could protectively emit an unpleasant-smelling secretion as a skunk would.
