Aberdeen Falls Sri Lanka: 5 Things to Know Before Your Visit - 5 Things Every Visitor Must Know Before Touring Aberdeen

Aberdeen Falls remains a main attraction for those touring the natural wonders in and around Nuwara Eliya. From knowing when to visit the waterfall to preparing to tackle local insect life, here are 5 tips every tourist should know before hiking up to Aberdeen Falls.

1

Time the Visit

Tourists who are heading to Nuwara Eliya for the expressed purpose of witnessing the majesty of this iconic waterfall must time their visit. Although Aberdeen Falls is a decent natural highlight during most months of the year, those who wish to gaze upon this mammoth cascade when it is at its frothiest must visit during the months between September and December. Aberdeen Falls is nothing short of magnificent during the months of the year when the power of the water is at its highest due to the heavy rainfall. This is also one of the least expensive times of the year to holiday in the area as December kick starts the peak travel season, which hikes up prices in local accommodations and even tours.

2

Getting There

Travellers who are based at Araliya Green City or any one of the other hotels near Nuwara Eliya Town will find that renting a car or a taxi is the best way to travel to Aberdeen Falls. While there are public transport options available in the area, reaching the location of this waterfall in Nuwara Eliya can be difficult for those who do not have their own set of wheels as the weather in this town is unpredictable at best. Cycling or biking to the waterfall is also not recommended as one can get soaked midway through the journey. While Google Maps can provide directions to the waterfall, it's important to look for a sign on the road before reaching the endpoint suggested by the app. Once you find the sign, continue to the end of the road where you'll find a parking lot and a snack kiosk.

3

Watch out for Leeches

All tourists embarking on a journey to witness any Sri Lankan waterfall, particularly those located in the mountainous regions of the island, must be weary of leeches. Make sure you wear sneakers or hiking boots with socks or tight-fitting leggings to ensure that the creepy crawlies do not have access to bare skin on your legs. Although leeches are hardly neither dangerous nor poisonous, they can be an irritating part of enjoying the outdoors in Sri Lanka's hill country. If one is bitten by a leech, it is best to use a card or a similarly flat object to slide underneath the worm and remove it gently. Do not attempt to pluck it off the skin rashly as it will leave behind its teeth and mouth on the skin.

4

The Hike Up

Buy some snacks from the shack near the parking area before embarking on the hike. The journey is only 20 minutes away from the parking lot by foot and it is best to wear shoes with socks rather than sandals or flip flops due to the slippery nature of the path.

5

What to Do

Apart from picnicking by the waterfall, those who dare may wish to also take a dip in the plunge poo
