A short 10-kilometre drive to the west of the city of Matara will bring you to the popular Coconut Tree Hill — a slice of beach favoured by locals and tourists alike for its breathtaking seaside beauty. Coconut Tree Hill is exactly what it sounds like — a hilly stretch of fine golden sands dotted with towering coconut trees galore. The stunning beach is particularly popular among Instagrammers as it makes for a killer backdrop that will have people drooling over your 'gram. Coconut Tree Hill is much closer to the city of Mirissa than it is to Matara, but it's totally worth it to make the short drive as the views afforded here are literally breathtaking.
If crow island just off the coast of Matara's popular Polhena Beach is known for one thing, it would be for flying kites. The island's position between the mouth of the Nilwala Ganga River and the wide-open seas makes the wind conditions around the island perfect for some fun kite flying. Come the season of kite flying, the azure blue skies are covered with kites of colours of all sorts, where the young, as well as the young at heart, are fully immersed in flying their kite as high as possible.
The town's most-visited and main stretch of beach, Polhena Beach, is favoured by tourists to Matara, not without reason. The things to do on offer are plentiful, and with the combination of crystal-clear waters, year-round sunshine and striking coral reefs, snorkelling is undoubtedly high on the list. Throw yourself in a snorkelling suit and hit the alluring waters to uncover the treasures of the world underwater.
Set on Dondra Head, Dondra, about 7 kilometres east of Matara, the eponymous lighthouse isn't only the tallest lighthouse in Sri Lanka but also marks the southernmost point in the island nation. Climb your way to the top of the Colonial architectural masterpiece, where you are greeted with breathtaking views of the surrounding seaside scenery.
