Best Things to Do in Pasikuda - Discover this eastern coastal wonder

Pasikuda is 35 kilometres from Batticaloa and lies on the Eastern coastal belt of Sri Lanka. The little town has become a prominent resort town with one of the bluest coastlines on the island. In addition, the region has quite a few attractions with many historical and cultural places to visit.

1

Explore the beaches

Pasikudha and Kalkuda beaches are perhaps the highlights of this area. The light blue coastline and its white sandy beach are just picture-perfect! Due to its coral reefs, beaches are calm and perfect for water sports like banana boating and snorkelling. The beach is mostly child-friendly and free from rough waves, although playing near the reef will require some parental supervision.
Amethyst Resort Passikudah is a popular Passikudah resort when it comes to accommodation.

2

Visit Batticaloa Fort

The Batticaloa Fort was built in 1628 by the Portuguese and later seized by the Dutch and the British. The defensive fort has four fortifications, with two of them overlooking the lagoon, and remains in fine condition. Several government establishments and a Buddhist temple are found within the fort.

3

Visit the Batticaloa Lagoon

The lagoon at Batticaloa is the largest of its kind in Sri Lanka and extends for 58 km. Its surrounding region includes many cultivations like coconut, rice and shrimp farming. You can find an abundant mangrove overgrowth here that attracts migrating birds from Europe. The iron bridge built over the lagoon (called Kallady Bridge) is the lengthiest and oldest in Sri Lanka. Sometimes referred to as the Lady Manning Bridge, it's notable for the singing fish living below the waters!

4

Batticaloa Lighthouse

This active lighthouse is an amazing spot to visit while in the Passikudha region. Constructed during British occupation in 1913, it offers breathtaking views of the lagoon. The location is ideal for walking and cycling, with spectacular views of the ocean surrounding you. It is also among the most scenic locations to catch a magnificent sunset when in Passikuda!

5

Head to Kokkadicholai Hindu Temple

A unique Hindu Temple with multiple fascinating tales and miracles woven around, Kokkadicholai Hindu Temple lies 15 km southwest of Batticaloa. According to anecdotes, the phrase 'Siva lingam' stemmed from this Hindu temple, and the site contains one of the most naturally formed symbols of the God, Siva. It is among the oldest Hindu Kovils in Sri Lanka, with historical records dating back to the Chola Empire of the 4th century BCE.

6

Go Diving

The Bay in Pasikudah is ideal for diving, and the most prominent location is the wreck site of the British aircraft carrier HMS Hermes. HMS Hermes served during World War II and dropped into the sea off Batticaloa in 1942 during a Raid, attempting to offset Japanese attacks. It is probably the most prominent wreck on the island. The site has several significant artefacts lying in its watery grave, along with extensive marine life that has made the wreckage site their home. You will undoubtedly catch a glimpse of vast shoals of snapper, barracudas, tuna, grouper, nudibranchs and crabs.
