Top 5 Things to Do in Sri Lanka - Uncover Incredible Sri Lanka

Although small, Sri Lanka packs a big punch when it comes to its attractions. Explore beautiful beaches, majestic ruins, exquisite scenery and incredible wildlife.

1

Take the Kandy-Ella Train

Known to be one of the most scenic train rides by many travellers, the journey from Kandy to Ella is an attraction not to be missed. You will pass lush tea estates, waterfalls, misty mountains and pine forests as the train slowly but surely ascends to the beautiful town of Ella. In Ella, visit the Nine Arches Bridge, located between Ella and Demodara Station. It was constructed during the British colonial era to transport tea to Colombo. This eye-catching bridge is an excellent pit stop for a photo session. There is also the hike to Ella Rock! It is the most famous trail in the town and takes around three hours to complete. Trekking through misty green mountains, tea plantations, and breathtaking views in every direction is such a captivating experience that time seems to fly by without notice.

2

Climb Sigiriya

Sigiriya is an ancient rock fortress that once became the capital of Sri Lanka. King Kashyapa fled the kingdom of Anuradhapura after murdering his father, the rightful king. Rising above the dense forests, this massive monolith transformed into the perfect hideaway and the seat of the new kingdom. At its summit, the palace's ruins are visible, along with the king's throne and a rock pool.

3

Discover the Sri Lankan coastlines

Sri Lanka's southern coastal towns boast some of the best seasides on the island. If you head to the east, the cities of Arugambay, Passikudha, Kalkudah, and Trincomalee will enchant you with their spotless, secluded beaches. Water sports like surfing and kite surfing are becoming increasingly popular in every part of the island along with snorkelling and diving. Visitors will find out that some of the best resorts in Sri Lanka offered by popular chains such as Aitken Spence Hotels are located in the coastal areas of the island.

4

Experience Sri Lankan wildlife

Visit Udawalawe National Park to witness free-roaming wild elephants. The Udawalawe Reservoir is a favourite watering hole for elephants and other creatures. You can get to see them bathing and playing at a safe distance. You can also visit Gal Oya National Park and Minneriya National Park for more elephants. The latter is famous for the gathering, where hundreds gather around Minneriya Tank.
Other places to explore Sri Lanka's wildlife include Sinharaja Rainforest, Yala, Willpattu, Kaudulla, Wasgamuwa, Bundala, and Horton Plains National Park.

5

Explore Delft Island

Named Delft by the Dutch, its original name is Neduntivu in Tamil. Located on the northernmost tip of Sri Lanka, off the coast of Jaffna, this island village occupies 4500 people and herds of wild horses. The latter is one of its star attractions. This breed of horses is the ancestor of Arabian stallions left behind by the Dutch, who bred them for trade with India. You will also find a Dutch Fort constructed from corals and a few guesthouses to relax and experience life on a remote island.
