Ways to get around Luang Prabang – Being smart in getting about makes planning a piece of cake!

Located in northern Laos, scenic Luang Prabang city lies on a valley at the juncture of the Nam Khan and Mekong rivers. Having been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1994 it keeps welcoming visitors to enjoy the laid-back yet charming ancient capital of the Luang Prabang province.

1

Exploring Luang Prabang on foot

Being a small and picturesque town, in the northern mountainous region of Laos, Luang Prabang is a popular destination for visitors to explore the UNESCO World Heritage Sites as well as the many scenic waterfalls, bustling markets and enjoyable river tours. Since there is no public transport service available visitors need to rely on other options. There are many things you can do around this small city on foot such as relaxing by the river, taking a cookery class, witnessing an early morning alms ceremony as villages offer food to the Buddhist monks at dawn, and even visiting a temple to meet the monks.

2

Bike Rentals

Certain distances you are unable to do on foot outside the main town can be done on a bicycle. Renting them for a day or two to get around is prudent as you can see things at your pace at a reasonable price and rental places are available all over the city. Cycling is a popular mode of transportation by locals as well as many visitors even though they use tour packages at times or cruises by Mekong Kingdoms as a part of their holiday plans whilst in Luang Prabang. A daily bike rental commences at 15,000 LAK, and a motorbike (moped) will be around LAK75,000 per day.

3

Tuk-Tuk Rides

To explore sites and attractions further away such as the massive and cascading Kuang Si falls a tuk-tuk ride is ideal, whilst the minimum ride is about LAK20,000 the charge varies as per the distance. Based on your intentions it may be better to hire the tuk-tuk for the day. The cost of the ride is well worth the experience of witnessing the beautiful waterfall. If you want to see a waterfall closer where you can enjoy a cool dip as well Tad Sae falls just 15 km away from the city is another beautiful one although not as large as Kuang Si falls. Be open to bargaining for tuk-tuk hires.

4

Cruises on the Mekong River

An exquisite way to explore or experience the glittering temples, ancient caves, enchanting waterfalls, and glorious sunsets at this gem of a city in Laos is to pick from an array of specially designed packages for discerning visitors keen to learn about Laos. Choose a Luang Prabang Cruise to savour the mystical splendour and create lasting memories of your trip to Luang Prabang.

5

Taxi Rides

For long distances by road taxis or songthaew (a truck converted to become a shared taxi service for many at a time) can be used. Visiting distances such as Pak Ou caves to witness the vast collection of Buddha statues in different stances can be done by either of these modes of transport based on your budget and timing.
