The Best Things to Do in Ahungalla — South Coast Oasis

Ahungalla is located on the south coast of Sri Lanka. The area, blessed with an expansive sandy beach, is a tropical haven for enjoying sun, sand and surf as well as many other area attractions. Here are the best things to do in Ahungalla.

1

Chill on the Beach

Ahungalla Beach has got to be the area's best attraction. Think of a huge sandy bank tapering to the warm waters of the Indian Ocean, swaying coconut palms and refreshing king coconut drinks as you chill and enjoy the tropical vibes. Hotels in Ahungalla make the most of the beach with the most popular resorts like Heritance Ahungalla located right on the beach for easy access, morning, noon and night. Staying at a beach hotel in Ahungalla will let you enjoy early morning walks along the surf, evenings gazing at a mesmerising sunset and plenty of swimming and sunbathing in between.

2

Check out the Turtle Hatchery

The south coast of Sri Lanka is scattered with several sea turtle conservative centres. The closest to your Ahungalla hotel, and one of the best, is the Kosgoda Sea Turtle Conservative Project. Established way back in 1988, the sanctuary aims to offer sea turtles a safe refuge and a chance to thrive, away from the dangers of man and the environment. There is a nursery for hatching rescued turtle eggs as well as a mixed community of sea turtles from various species. It's an informative and exciting place to explore as a solo tour or with the family. Enjoy up-close encounters and also about the importance of preserving these creatures as a part of our conservative efforts to help the planet heal.

3

Tour Madu Ganga

Ganga means 'river' in Sinhalese. Madu Ganga is a rich ecosystem that is a treat to explore on a boat ride. You will discover a variety of wildlife both aquatic and land-based; otters and monitor lizards can be seen skulking around the water while monkeys and a large variety of birds exist on the little islets that dot the river. Some of the larger islets are home to cinnamon plantations, which you can visit to learn about the process of producing the fragrant spice and even purchase a bottle of cinnamon oil, which has many therapeutic values.

4

Head out to Galle

Galle is a historic town located on the south coast home to several UNESCO World Heritage Sites; the best of which is the Old Dutch Fort. The fort is about an hour's drive from your resort in Ahungalla and a fascinating place to explore. Well-preserved and a huge tourist attraction, the fort is home to many vintage buildings and churches built during the colonists' occupation of Sri Lanka. Established by the Portuguese, expanded by the Dutch and fortified by the English, the fort is a representative of each of the colonial nations that held the island in their grasp.

5

Spend a Day at Galle Fort

Galle Fort is a historic site to explore, but it is also a lovely place to spend a leisurely day. Wander the cobblestone streets, visit the Marine Museum and bathe in the clear waters of the beach located at the edge of the fort. There are many little cafes and restaurants inside the fort, catering to both locals and foreigners and serving a variety of cuisines.
