7 Unique Attractions in Windhoek, Namibia - Seven Unusual Highlights to Explore in Namibian Capital Windhoek

Windhoek is the commercial and cultural heart of Namibia, and there's more to this city than the typical attractions of an African metropolis. Here are seven unique highlights all visitors must discover during a stay in this dynamic city in Namibia.

1

Daan Viljoen Game Park

While most African capitals are home to popular wildlife sanctuaries in the form of zoos and other enclosures, Windhoek is within easy driving distance of the sprawling Daan Viljoen Game Park. Just 18 km away from the nation's capital, this vast nature reserve is situated in Khomas Hochland and is home to countless mammals and bird species numbering well over 200. Apart from camping facilities, visitors can also embark on safari tours to come face-to-face with the park's antelope and wildebeest population.

2

Independence Memorial Museum

Those based at the Avani Windhoek Hotel and Casino or any one of the other Windhoek hotels should also pay a visit to the Independence Memorial Museum. While it may not be as well-known as the National Museum of Namibia, which is also situated in Windhoek, the venue is no less impressive. The museum documents the country's heroic struggle towards independence and freedom from colonial rule, and each floor of the museum is dedicated to a part of Namibia's path to sovereignty.

3

Trans-Namib Transport Museum

Located in the stunning Cape Dutch-era train station down Bahnhof Street, the Trans-Namib Transport Museum is contained within a building that dates back to 1912. Built by the Germans and renovated in 1929, this cultural institution explores the evolution of public transport methods throughout the years. Not limited to maritime and airway history, the museum also delves into how railway lines were introduced to the country.

4

Zoo Park

Having been a public zoo till the early 1960s, Zoo Park today is less of a wildlife hub and more of a leisure centre and picnic hotspot. Lined with trees and shaded areas, Zoo Park is the best place to go for a long walk, enjoy a good book under the shade of a tree or spend quality time with loved ones. Local residents and office workers often lunch here due to the tranquil environment of the park.

5

National Art Gallery

The National Art Gallery of Namibia is also found in Windhoek even if most tourists are unaware of this cultural institution and the incredible works of art contained within. Delving into the rich natural and historical legacy of the country, the permanent collection on show at the National Art Gallery showcases the crème de la crème of Namibian creative expression in painting, sculpture and other forms.

6

Heinitzburg Castle

Just a short walk up from Robert Mugabe Avenue in Windhoek lies this impressive castle, which has now been turned into an accommodation hub and a restaurant. Out of the three colonial-era castles located in Windhoek, Heinitzburg Castle is perhaps the lesser-known architectural marvel designed by none other than Wilhelm Sander. Dating back to 1914, this charming building is a must-visit highlight for culture buffs touring the city.

7

The Old Magistrates’ Court

Constructed in 1898 by Carl Ludwig, Windhoek's Old Magistrates’ Court was never utilised for its intended purpose but remains a lesser known landmark in the city.
