It is, in fact, one of the safest destinations with one of the lowest crime rates in the entire world. From solo travellers to female holidaymakers and families vacationing with kids in tow, safety is the last thing you’d want to worry about in Dubai. The futuristic city basks in the glory of its glorious reputation for public safety, and rightly so, which is made possible thanks to the network of countless cameras that spread throughout the city, recording your every move, and probably the real deterrent is the severity of the punishments associated with the crimes in the UAE.
As much as Dubai is the futuristic city it is, the UAE, including its crown jewel, Dubai, is very proud of its age-old values associated with the country’s deep roots in Islam. If you know anything about Islamic nations, you’ll probably know that they appreciate modesty in all elements of life, and Dubai is no different. How you dress undoubtedly plays a vital role in being a responsible tourist who respects the local culture and values of your host country. So, clothes that evoke modesty are advisable over less skimpy and revealing clothes.
As surprising as it may sound, for a city that is “ultra-modern”, public transport isn’t Dubai’s strong suit. There’s a metro and bus service in place, but they supposedly don’t share the same tremendous reputation that’s associated with almost all other elements of the city. As a solo traveller, if you have concerns about taking a private taxi alone, you'll be happy to know that the likelihood of encountering a bad experience with taxi drivers in Dubai is extremely low.
It is crucial that you know, as an Islamic state, Dubai strictly abides by Sharia Law and all tourists to the city are also expected to abide by it. Use of crude language, public displays of affection and non-consensual photography of people are some of the activities that are prohibited by local laws.
As you might already know, the UAE, including Dubai, is not exactly a fan of firewater. The consumption of alcohol is illegal in the UAE. Unless you are a foreign tourist indulging at one of the fine Sheikh Zayed Road Dubai hotels the likes of Avani Ibn Battuta Hotel, or any other licensed establishment, alcohol is a big no-no.
