6 Amazing Waterfalls to Explore Near Kandy, Sri Lanka – Admire the awesome beauty of these sparkling falls!

The scenic city of Kandy is situated in between mountain ranges such as the Knuckles range and Hantana range with a densely forested landscape at an elevation of 500 m above sea level. It is no wonder that Kandy is blessed with some enchanting waterfalls visitors fall in love with.

Hunnas Falls

Falling from a height of 48 metres and in two sections making it prettier, this cascading fall is fed by a stream from the nearby Hunnasgiriya Mountain and therefore has a lush mountainous backdrop adding to its beauty. The surrounding area of the falls is best explored in the morning on a hike to view it close at hand and find trees endemic to Sri Lanka as well as other flora and fauna. If you are up for it, take a dip in the cool waters as often tried out by visitors as one of the best things to do in Kandy.

Rathna Falls

Formed by the Hasalaka Oya this is about a drive of 2 hours from Kandy this is a wide curtain of water dropping from 111 metres above making it the 14th tallest waterfall on the island and a fascinating beauty. Although you can hike close to the bottom of the falls bathing there is not recommended, however, make use of the opportunity to capture some memorable shots of the falls and the surrounding environs.

Ramboda Falls

Situated in the Pussellawa area, this is a majestic fall dropping from a height of 109 metres in a trilogy of falls. To get closer to the cascading falls one needs to take the footpath near the middle fall close to the Colombo, Kandy to Nuwara Eliya road. The uphill climb is scenic and is worth the effort. The middle fall provides a nice spot for bathing whilst the lower part of the falls is not visible to the main road. This is an ideal hike for nature lovers as the area is rich in biodiversity. So not only the images and the experience of the falls are uplifting but the lush fauna and flora will make you linger enjoying the visit just like the guests from Hotel Topaz tend to do.

St Clair’s Falls

One of the widest waterfalls in Sri Lanka, this is often called the Little Niagara of Sri Lanka. As this picturesque waterfall glides down through the rolling green hills of tea plantations under St Clair’s Estate the beauty has been christened by the same name. At 80 metres in height and 50 metres in breadth, St Clair’s has the Maha Ella and Kuda Ella (the bigger falls and lesser falls) and is visible from many viewpoints, especially on a train ride. You would also spot vehicles stopping to admire this cascading lady and click some images to capture her beauty.

Devon Falls

Situated close to St Clair’s Falls, this charming waterfall is also known as the Veil of the Valley as it has an exquisite cascade like a shimmering veil plummeting down the ragged rocks into the rich green hillside. A vision you are not likely to forget for a long time. This is the 19th-highest waterfall on the island. and has been named after the British Coffee planter by the same name as the falls formed by a tributary of Kotmale Oya was nearby the coffee plantation.

Huluganga Falls

Situated in Huluganga Town not far from Kandy Village, this spectacular waterfall drops from a height of 75 metres cascading down sending off fine sprinkles of water to the closeby villages. Huluganga originates from the famous Knuckles Mountain range attracts onlookers and visitors and gracefully falls into the tallest dam in Sri Lanka, the Victoria Dam.
