This laidback seaside town on the southern coast of Sri Lanka though small packs a load of interesting sites and experiences. From famous tea to history and culture Weligama also provides some awesome waves for surf lovers making it a treasure trove for visitors.
Handunugoda Estate is situated a short drive from Weligama and is one of the few estates in Sri Lanka exporting high-quality blends of tea such as virgin white tea to international markets. Don’t miss a visit to this plantation which is considered one of the interesting things to do in Weligama. The insightful guided tour is followed by a complimentary piece of cake and a fine cup of tea for only 2 USD.
Of nearly 300 species of snakes in the world, 96 are found in Sri Lanka. Of these 96, 50 are indigenous to this island. The snake farm is in Thelijjawila about 8 km from Weligama, and provides temporary shelter for non-venomous, highly venomous and in-between reptiles at a small conservatory which also provides native ayurvedic treatment for snake poisoning. An ideal place for those intrepid visitors to see and handle the non-venomous creatures at this farm.
This is a small sandy beach in Mirissa a few minutes tuk-tuk ride from Weligama. Not much of a secret to visitors at present, most locals enjoy this secluded beach too. Split into two beach areas, this stretch provides a tranquil break to spend a few hours relaxing. A couple of stalls provide refreshing coconut water to all those enjoying the sun and sand here.
This tiny island near Weligama Bay has a large mansion built in the 1920s taking pride in place. It graciously played host to many dignitaries visiting the island during that era, adding a colourful history to the island that visitors such as those at Parangi Weligama Bay have discovered. You can arrive by ferry or at low tide, or even wading across. The luxury mansion in the beautiful island setting offers a stay of comfort and indulgence par excellence.
The golden shores of Weligama are well-known as pristine spots for surfing on the island. Every April and November scores of whales and dolphins seem to follow the currents from the north Antarctic to the Indian Ocean for breeding their offspring. Out of the 07 endangered species of turtles, 05 are found in Sri Lanka namely olive ridley, hawksbill, loggerhead, green and leatherback turtles. The Rekawa Turtle Watch in Tangalle, not far from Weligama protects nesting sites from predators and enables eggs to hatch safely and nurture baby turtles until they are released back to the ocean.
Weligama is popular for its exciting nightlife with scores of visitors letting their hair down. Most exciting are the beach parties, with many trendy bars around with well-stocked bars to have energy levels high, enjoy the brews and dance the night away ending your holiday on a high note.
