Traditional Myanmar Dishes You Shouldn’t Miss – Delectable Delights for Foodies

If you visit the charming nation of Myanmar there would be several delicious dishes to try out; these include delicious mohinga, Burmese tofu, samosa thoke, tea leaf salad, Shan-style noodles and more.

1

Mohinga

The popular mohinga happens to be regarded as Myanmar's national dish. A hearty soup of rice noodles, this dish is herb-based and flavoured with lemongrass. Mohinga is generally enjoyed at breakfast often eaten with the crispy pith obtained from banana trees. It would also be accompanied by soft-boiled sliced duck eggs, crunchy split pea fritters and savoury fishcakes while being served with a scattering of chopped coriander leaves and roasted flakes of chilli. This dish could readily be obtained at cafes and from street vendors in Myanmar.

2

Burmese tofu

You will find that Burmese tofu would be made from chickpeas, whereas Shan tofu would be composed of split peas. Burmese tofu would often be consumed after being made into fritters; these would be crisp on the outside with a fluffy middle and accompanied by a piquant tamarind dip. However, it could also be sliced to make a salad that would also feature a tangy dressing. Burmese tofu could also be served melted with a portion of spiced noodles.

3

Samosa thoke

When it comes to street food in Myanmar, a highlight would be the traditional samosa thoke. This Burmese speciality would bear a resemblance to the Indian samosa but would be rather smaller in size. You will find that samosa thoke would be filled with a mixture of chickpea powder and potatoes. These pastries would then be deep-fried and immersed in a Burmese curry, after which they would be garnished with a blend of sliced onions, mint leaves, tomatoes, brown chickpeas and cabbage.

4

Tea leaf salad

The distinctive tea leaf salad or lahpet thoke would undoubtedly be counted amongst the most iconic Myanmar dishes. To make it, the slightly bitter sour pickled tea leaves would be hand-mixed with sliced tomatoes, chopped white cabbage, crisp peanuts, dried shrimp, lima beans, peas, ginger and various other spices; these combine to make a savoury piquant salad that bursts with interesting textures and flavour. An accommodation choice to consider where you could base yourself as you visit restaurants in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar to savour local dishes would be PARKROYAL Nay Pyi Taw.

5

Shan style 'tofu' noodles

Interestingly, this tasty dish would not actually feature tofu, instead consisting of a sticky thick yellow porridge composed of chickpea flour with turmeric; this preparation would be served with marinated pork or chicken and fine rice noodles, with a topping of chilli oil, broth and pickled vegetables.

6

Fried snacks (kyaw)

In Myanmar, you may also savour a selection of fried snacks or kyaw which you could readily find on the city streets. These fried foods would be crunchy, light and free of grease making them a great choice for a snack. As well as pancakes and samosas, the street snack foods that you could find would include such delights as urad dal fritters, gourd fritters, onion fritters, prawn fritters, tofu fritters, whitebait fritters, spring rolls and so on. These appealing foods would be both delicious and affordable.
