Things to Do in Ella, Sri Lanka – Escape into the lush hills of Sri Lanka

Ella is a much-loved hillside village in the Badulla District. It is a favourite hotspot for many travellers due to its cold weather, beautiful scenery, breathtaking hiking trails and interesting social scene.

1

Photo session at Nine Arches Bridge

The Nine Arches Bridge is one of the most famous attractions in Ella and is located between Ella and Demodara Station. It was built during the British colonial period to transport tea to Colombo. According to anecdotes, during its construction at the height of World War I, the builders ran out of steel. However, the local builders continued the project using rough stone and bricks. The result of that invention is the nine-arched bridge that has stood the test of time. This a highlight for all visitors to Ella! Enthusiastic photographers are in for a treat, with fantastic scenery surrounding the bridge.

2

Climb Ella Rock

Ella Rock is the most prominent hiking trail for visitors and climbing this rock is one of the best things to do in Ella. The hike takes around three hours to complete. Trekking through the lush, mist-filled green mountains will be a treat for all the senses. En route, you will encounter green tea plantations and breathtaking views. At daybreak, the summit becomes magical, and the sight of the sun rising over the misty mountain would mesmerise you.

A trek to Little Adams Peak is a must-do activity when visiting Ella. The approximately 50-minute hike takes you through picturesque green tea plantations and offers stunning mountain views. At the summit, you'll find a small shrine for Lord Buddha and an unforgettable backdrop of the surrounding mountains. Be sure to catch the sunrise for an extra magical experience. If you're feeling adventurous, you can also try the Flying Ravana zip line, ATV/quad bike rides, abseiling, archery, and air rifling, all available on-site. The resident temple monks will be happy to tell you the history of this old temple. Surrounded by green hills, the site exudes peace and tranquillity like no other.

Scale Ravana Falls

This stunning waterfall has a rich history and is said to be associated with legends of King Ravana from the Ramayana. The falls are about 10-15 minutes away from Ella and can be reached via car or tuk-tuk. According to legends, after Ravana had kidnapped Sita, he hid her in a secret cave behind the waterfall. Visitors can take a refreshing dip in the cool waters of the pool at the base of the waterfall. The water cascades down from a height of over 80 feet, creating a picturesque and mesmerising sight. Don't forget to bring your camera, as you'll want to capture the beauty of this natural wonder.
